Love Divination

    Love divination has always been very popular. There are many spells and rituals in folklore that tell us a way to discover our future mates.

Hair and Mirror Divination:
    This is an Appalachian spell to help us see our future mate. Traditionally, this spell was preformed by women but really I suppose it only matters that your hair be long enough to cover your eyes. An hour before sundown sit in a darkened room illuminated only by one single candle. Sit before a mirror and begin to rhytmically brush your hair down over your face so that it covers your eyes. Do this for at least one hundred strokes and count each stroke (this will help put you in a meditative state). After one hundred strokes stop and peer through the veil of your hair into the mirror to see your mate. Sit quietly with your eyes on the mirror until the visions appear. Be careful that this ritual does not go into darkness or it's said the visions you see will be those of your funeral.

Gardens, Graveyards, and Visions of Love:
    This is another Appalachain love diviantion. For this you will need a minister's gardening tool. If you don't know a minister to use a tool I'm sure one from a church, temple, or coven would suffice. Take the tool into a graveyard at midnight and turn facing to the west. Then, plunge the tool into the ground with as much strenght as you can. Close your eyes and ask the guardian spirit of the cemetery to allow a vision of the spectral form of your future mate. Now face the east and open your eyes to see the shadow of your future mate walk past in the distance. If they travel from south to north you will have a happy marriage. If they travel from north to south you will have a lusty marriage. However if they travel from east to west you will be very unhappy and if from west to east you will be poor but content.

The Purple Passion of Violets:
    This is to be done on a Monday of a full moon. Take a handful of freshly picked violet buds and throw them in front of you while thinking of romance and they will fall into a pattern that suggests the name or initals of your future mate.

Apple Divinations and Spells:
     Apples have been associated with love from ancient times. The apple was a sacred fruit of Aphrodite the Greek goddess of love and it was seen as the fruit of love in Midevial Europe.
I. To see the initals of your future mate, peel an apple in a corkscrew motion being sure not to let the peel break. While you peel concentrate on the identity of your future mate. Once the apple is stripped bare let the peel fall to the ground and you should see the initals.
II. If a woman sits in a darkened room of St. John's, St. Mark's, or St. Agnes' Eve and eats an apple while gazing into a mirror she will see the image of her mate reflected back at her.

Myrtle and Flame Divination:
    Slowly toss myrtle sprigs into a burning fire one piece at a time and focus on seeing the face of your future mate. As you toss the herbs you may want to say
Myrtle sweet as a mountain spring,
Show me he/she who will wear my ring.

A Turn of the Cake:
    An English folk spell says that if a woman mixes cake batter on St. Agnes' Eve while willing herself to learn the identity of her future mate, she needs only to start the cake baking to that it is halfway point in the baking cycle will occut at midnight. Then she should leave the kitchen dark and go to a room where she cannot see either the kitchen or any door to the house. At midnight the spirit of her future mate will come and turn the cake, leaving his initals carved in the top.

Evoking Dreams of Love:
     To bring dreams of your future love use a rose quartz stone, seashell, or jasmine oil, incense, or tea. (Be careful, jasmine smells lite at first and you may be adpt to use too much but really has an extremely strong scent.) Anoint the stone or shell with the jasmine and empower it as a tailsman of phrophetic love dreams. Now take the tailsman and place it underneath your pillow. Brew some jasmine tea and sip a bit before going to bed. Keeping the intent of what you wish to dream as you fall asleep, you should dream of your future romance.
