Essential Oils
Essential oils are a big part of may magickal households and even may kitchens.  They can be expernsive, ecspecially oils like rose.  However, these oils are not that hard to make and can be made at home.  Herbal cooking oils are usually the eaisest.  You can make herbal cooking oils by placing fresh herbs in a bottle of oil and leaving the herbs in there for as long as you use the oil.  Garlic is wonderful with this method because of it's strong scent and flavour.
However, oils for anointing, baths, magick use, massage, and potpourri are made though different proccesses.  The best way to start is to decide what effect you want your oil to have and then chose herbs accrodingly.  If you want an oil of romance for example rose and jasmine may be desired.  If it's a certain smell you want keep in mind that dried herbs do not always incorporate their smells into oil as you may think.  Roses make beautiful oils, but when you put leaves or any other green parts in the oil then it has a plant-like unpleasent smell.  Next you need to decided what sort of oil base you will be using.  Almond, mineral, Olive, safflower, and other oils work very well for steeping herbs, however some are heaiver than others.  Be sure you find an oil with a nice texture.  Also, some oils work better with some herbs and plants, experiment!
Pick the buds, and plants if you are going to use them fresh,  in the early morning before the sun gets to your plants.  Their frangrence is strongest in the morning.  Steep your herbs in warm, but not boiling, oil until the petals of flowers become translucent or the oil smells strongly of the herbs.  At this time remove the solution from heat, strain, and repate until you reach the inesity you would like.  Be patient, this takes practice.
Another method is to steep the herbs in a dark bottle in a sunny spot for several months.  This is ecspecially well in the summer months, however takes time and has it's own drawbacks.  If you chose this method be sure to check on your oils often to be sure there aren't any fuzzy things growing in them.  If you need you can put the oils under a sunlamp but you will need to keep them under it for a substanle amount of time.
Use caution when making oils.  If you are making an anointing or massage oil make sure the herbs in it do not irritate skin, or those you use it on have no allergies to the herbs.  Always do research on the herbs you are using because some herbs in oil form are very dangerous.  Remember "if one can cure, two can kill" and be sure you are using correct, or "safe" amounts.
Store your oils carefully.  First, be sure you store your oil in bottles that will not leak, many oils will stain clothing and other things they come in contact with.  Cough syrup bottles are good and I'm rather fond of using mason canning jars.  Also, many occult suppliers sell bottles for herbal oils and some are very pretty.  When storing your oils pay attention to their needs.  Some need to be kept in cool places, some may need warmer places.  Most oil will need to be kept in dry places so molds do not grow in them.  Plus, certain oils need to be kept in coloured, or dark, bottles.  Be sure you know these details.  It is also very important that you store your herbs out of reach of small children and pets.  This is because most oils are very dangerous if injested!  Don't forget to clearly lable your oils.  You do not want to use the wrong oil for the wrong thing this too can have disatrous effects, magickally and healthwise.
These are some other methods of making oils, experiment and see what works best for you and what herbs seem to take better to which method.  These oils are used for extracting oils from flowers, which can sometimes be tricky.  For the first method hang the flowers, stem and all, in a bottle with secured lid, after about a week you will find a solution in the bottom of the bottle, this is the essental oil of the flower.  Another menthod, for roses, is to warm them in water until they become translucent, strain off the petals, then refrigerate the water.  Small spots of oil will begin to form on the top of the water and you can take them off like butter and used as needed.  In this sort of extracting a tiny bit goes a long way, so don't use very much.
Explore you imaginations for blends and don't be afraid to try them.  It's a good idea to limit combinations to around four herbs, flowers, and/or fruits.  The more ingredients the harder the oil is to make.  Herbs can be very fickle and react differently to heat, base oils, and light so be patient!
