Troop 430 to Peiper Cave 12-1-07
On December 1st, 2008, Philadelphia Grotto met up with Troop 430 to go caving. We headed on out of Morgantown, PA west on the Turnpike to get to one of the best caves for beginners in Pennsylvania.
We arrived at Peiper with normality and suited up to get ready to enter. It was a good day with clear skies. It hadn't rained much that year. This was the most prevalent reason that the cave was drier than I can remember it ever having been. Places in the cave were actually dusty.
Right inside the entrance we were greeted by the pungent odor of a rotting raccoon carcious. It had not been there too long and it was right in the middle on the narrow entrance. There was no way to go around it. Just hold your breath and step over and get through the first hole. As we went thought the cave, this raccoon had left deposits behind that were growing that "Don King" hairy mold that's just so (puke) nice to see.
Aside from the all that, it was a fun trip. The kids were really adventurous and tried everything we threw at them. They even out caved the adults, who choose to exit after a few hours, and went down the chimney and on to the lower catacombs. Actually they didn't want to leave, so we all played in the cave for a while more.
Aside from being extra dry inside and the raccoon additions, it was a great trip. I know we're going to cave with Troop 430 again in the future.
