I appreciate your comments viz. Southern Gear, and agree with them. Southern Buckeye is one in which overlapping (one within each other valves?) feed the main engine, and each valve set(s) have their own set of controlling rods. It is not the same except t e sets of timing rods are designed the same as on the Southern gear used on locomotives. It is on the material from Dockstader. It looks to me like "Rube Goldberg" thought it up-but I figure it must have had a purpose to some user, and I would like to kno what? By the way, that engine you built is a beautiful piece of work. Congratulations and much success with your steam work. Good Luck, Pete

Good luck with the train track. Scott

I'm going around to all the sites I can and reading Live Steam magazine to get ideas for a r.r. I want. I thought yours was great, especially the plastic ties. I've seen such 'lumber' in a nearby park and have a friend who started a company to recycle pla tic used in the carpet industry. But I would like to know where you get your 2x4s. Could you e-mail me? Also, I was impressed with the copy editing you did. As a newspaper editor I look for typos and in my quick read I found only one. That's about one hun redth you find in most sites, even the most 'professional' ones.

CommentsA great and inspirational site! I will definitely be investigating 'plastic' ties - what a good idea (how are they for flamability from grass fires or dropped cinders?). When young and foolish (and living on the other side of the Atlantic), I par icipate as a 'grunt' in the by-hand building by volunteers of the Festiniog Railway's spiral line at Ddualt - just lookng at your under-construction photos re-activated many latent twinges in my back. Best wishes from western Canada (its snowing outside s I write and already mid-May!)

Hi Bruce, It was great to meet and talk with you at Mike's Golden Spike event. Since that day I have been trying, without any luck to contact Mike McClure at RRSC to ask about starting my first engine. Do you know how I can reach him, the number in the c talog is v ice mail, and no one ever returns a call. What would you recommend as a first engine? I know the American as a less complicated valve gear, but I would rather build a 2-6-0 Mogul. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Your site is very well done, and very interesting, also how do I go about putting in a small order for rail and plastic ties? Look forward to hear ng from you. Regards, Charlie Jensen

Comments Dear Bruce, I just saw your message on the "livesteam" board. I have had this problem one other time and s nce you are on a huge server like geocities, I can guarantee you what the problem is. All ISP's have an "acceptable use policy" and they enforce it by cutting of the connection to the offending servers. Someone probably spammed my ISP (Internet merica) and they have cut off geocities until geo and IA have discussed the problem. The only way we could communicate from your server to mine now is to tr and get your ISP to talk to Internet America. I tried this once before and the gentlem n that I was working with had to get a hot mail account to be able to communicate before he changed ISP's. Anyway, I just got the scoop about the plastic lumber. I called the company listed on your links and despite what is being said on the Liveste m board, there is no wood at all in this material. Thanks for your great page and for posting such a quality ti material for everyone! I have been looking for a source for a few years now and you beat me to it! Check out my Compani s website listed above on the URL submission space on your guestbook. My company NGS Inc. Is going to be the greatest builder of mus um accurate large scale livesteamers ever and the products will prove this to everyone that sees them. Narrow Gauge upply Inc. is my niche and no one has more data, drawings, expertise, or more drive and enthusiasm in this area of our hobby to make thin s happen than myself and my company. All my projects are in-house right now but I may offer my toys to the publ c in a few years unless someone wants what I am currently making for in-house use. Best Regards David A. Bloyed
