Tour of the System , September 2000

In the year 2000 a small band of enthusiasts made an afternoon tour of the route of the old Ll&CBER . Starting at West Shore we made our way by minibus round Palladium Corner , along Mostyn Street and through Craig-y-Don . A commentary on the route was provided by Jim Tonge .

At Craigside we stopped and surveyed the route through Bodafon Fields as George Mather , one time seasonal driver on the Ll&CBER , gave us an explanation of the track layout and the driving techniques used on the sharp curve when descending the gradient .

A bonus was the discovery of a concrete traction pole base still in situ , which confirmed the alignment of the route at this point .

We paused at the top of Penrhyn Hill to note the only two remaining traction poles from the system , which still support the "Llandudno welcomes You " sign .

Onward past the site of the old company Toll Gate and to the Tram Depot . Lynx Express Carriers , the present occupiers of the site , kindly let us have access to the inside of the building and we were rewarded with the sight of the original depot tracks still set in the floor .The overhead wooden troughs for the trolley wires remain with some of the supporting ears still in place .

We followed the route on through Rhos-on-Sea , West end , Colwyn bay and Old Colwyn .Sadly there is nothing to indicate the one time presence of the tramway on the rest of the route . However , the fine weather and informative commentary made it a very enjoyable trip.
