Chapter Seven: Do You Hear the People Sing? |
In retrospect, I should have followed my initial instincts about the Maze Island Rebellion. It would have saved me a world of pain, but I was in love. In love with the people of Maze Island, and in love with one of Aden's revolutionaries, a missionary named Brother Jacob Arjin. I would have done anything for that man, and in fact, I did. Repeatedly. I killed an inspector for him. I distracted the constables for him. I delivered messages to his girlfriend for him. The fact of the matter was that I simply didn't exist in Jacob's |

world that way. That was one of the hardest lessons I learned, especially when I killed Inspector Grantaire for him. Meanwhile, Aden's revolution was gaining momentum. It seemed that everyone was flocking to our side. All Aden wanted to begin was a sign that the time had come. Our sign came soon enough and the barricades rose around Maze Island. I wasn't supposed to be present at the fray, but I was. They kept trying to send me away. Jacob asked me to deliver a final message to his fiance, Suzette. Aden sent me off for supplies. I kept coming back, a lucky thing too, for I discovered that Ewan was among the revolutionaries as a spy. Although I exposed him, I alos helped him to escape being killed. I don't think he understood why. It |
was around then that the fighting began. Only one person was killed in the initial scuffle: Jacob's Suzette. I think, after that happened, Jacob lost his will to live. I can't say I blame him. A night of agony followed. We all drank to the lives we were giving up more than to the cause. In the morning, the true attack began. There was nothing honorable about what the Red Dragon's men did to us. They ambushed us in our sleep. Some of my friends didn't even |
have the time to reach for their weapons. It wasn't a fair fight, it was a massacre. I knew in a heartbeat we were going to lose. And that's when I made an important decision that would very much shape my life for times to come. I found Aden in the middle of the fight and told him to run away. Of course, he downright refused so I knocked him out, pulling him to safety. |
I wouldn't find out what became of Aden for a very long time. I charged right back into the fray, just in time to see Jacob killed. His body fell on top of me and for hours, I was pinned there beneath him, listening to the cries of battle and death. No one saw me there as they lit our |
barricade on fire. I escaped through the sewers, watching as the poor of Maze Island picked the pockets of the dead and dying. Finally, I came out into the light and found myself near the bridge connecting Maze Island to the rest of Hyrule. I saw Ewan standing on the edge, ready to throw himself into the black water. Voices screamed in my head and I ran forward, pulling him off the bridge. He said he wanted to die. In saving his life, I had entirely confused his sense of right and wrong and he was lost. I asked him to take me home. He found a purpose again and agreed to bring me back to Garden Place. |
