Kalmar Nyckel | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The Kalmar Nyckel ("Key of Kalmar") moored at New Castle, Delware. The Ship is 300+ tons of displacement, 93 feet of deck, 141 feet sparred. A recreation of the record-breaking colony ship of the same name from Sweden, she's a square-rigged Dutch pinnace. Speedy and handy, the original Kalmar nyckel made a record four round trips to New Sweden (Delaware) in the early and mid 1600s. Later, she spent some years in the Royal Swedish Fleet, where her handiness and turn of speed made her a useful scout for the main fleet. She finished her life sailing as a merchant vessel, though her final fate is unknown.
The Ship's Bell. The Kalmar Nyckel has more than a twenty dogs carved into her, all over the ship.
The view from the quarterdeck. With a mostly volunteer crew, and operating on donations, this vessel makes lengthy voayages every summer, showing the flag of Delaware. Volunteers wear blue jerseys, professioal crew wear white. |

Action on deck during a tack. The crew moves about their duties as they take a tack on the Delaware river. The men in white shirts are professional crew, giving instructions to the still-green crew of volunteers. |

The manuever is almost done, though the helm is still hard over. If you look at the red circle below the quarterdeck into the shadows, you can see the Helm at the Whipstaff (serves the same function as a ship's wheel). The Whipstaff goes through a slot in the deck, and attaches to the tiller, which controls the rudder. My mother, daughter, and nephew are in the other red circle, mugging for the camera on the Quarterdeck.
