In the fall of 1973, C-UMTD management decided to implement a new grid system of routes to replace the color-coded routes. East-West routes had odd numbers, while North-South routes had even numbers. Since there were no more colored routes, all the buses were painted red. This proved to be a failure, as many riders were having to make transfers where they previously had a one-seat ride. Also, the new route system required more buses (I calculated that 22 of the 25 buses were required), and it happened to coincide with the energy crisis. After Christmas, the color coded routes returned with a few modifications (one was that the Yellow line now served Orchard Downs) |
