AN ANCIENT MAGYAR LAND Transylvania had been part of Hungary for 1000 years. Since coming under Romanian occupation following the first world war, the Hungarians of Transylvania have endured over eighty years of ethnic cleansing and cultural genocide. The methods employed by the Romanian state in this effort have included the dismantlement of the Hungarian educational system, the confiscation of private and public property owned by Hungarians, intimidation, beatings, murder, as well as the forced relocation of Hungarians to other parts of Romania. In addition to these well documented Human Rights abuses, the Romanian state has embarked on a deliberate effort to alter the ethnic balance of the the region by means of inducing Romanians from other parts of that country to settle in Transylvania.
