The Datsuns - The Datsuns (V2) So the NME have hyped them to heaven and back, much the same way they do with anyone in a leather jacket these days. Yeah, they have long, greasy hair and yeah they’ve got all the moves from Spinal Tap but does the album live up to it’s billing? In a word, yes. Opener ‘Sittin Pretty’ is the best track on the record and flies out of the blocks like a rat up a drainpipe. It’s got one of those riffs that is so obvious, but down right genius. It builds and builds until a brilliant wah solo kicks in and you begin to think, ‘yeah, they’re alright,’ the kind of song that makes you thank God for the guitar. ‘Motherfucker from hell’ meanders through 3 minutes of hard and fast rock with all the pretence of Jimmy Page and a scream not a million miles away from sounding like Robert Plant. The entire album is influenced heavily by 70’s rock and in particular, Led Zepellin, which is no bad thing but I can’t really see them writing a ‘Stairway To Heaven’ in the near future. The next track, ‘Lady’ is built around a 4-chord stomper of a riff that gives not just a nod, but a firm handshake to Ritchie Blackmore in his Deep Purple days. It’s a stand out track that, give a few listens, will have it’s chorus implanted in your head for a good few days. Single release, ‘In Love,’ was the obvious track to put out and is a pretty good indication of what the album is all about to people who haven’t heard it. A good advertiser, if you will. Obviously ‘The Datsuns’ won’t be to everyone’s taste but if you’re into music with it’s roots firmly in 70’s rock, then you can’t really go wrong with this album. It asks the question, how comes none of these bands from down under haven’t made it at home and have to come to Europe, or go to America to sell some records? Who knows, but as long as the production line keeps rolling, we’ll be rocking for years to come. Phil South |
