The Libertines - Up The Bracket
(Rough Trade)

The Libertines have been branded as “The most fucked up band in Britain” by the NME. That’s kind of true , but I think they may have forgotten The Parkinsons. Push aside the drugs and the fighting, you will find some mighty fine music.
To be fair, the quality of the album is truly crap, you can hear mic stands falling over and all sorts, I don’t know if this was the intended sound of the album, but I can picture Mick Jones with his head in his hands.   The reason he probably stayed and produced the album is because he knows they have it in them. They probably cant be arsed picking up a guitar, when pushed though, they deliver the goods.
Every track is a diamond in the rough and through the smoke you can see the quality.
The album has it all, mainly cockney swagger, the sound of The Jam and The Clash creep through on almost every track without sounding like a cover band, which is a very good thing. Chanting, screaming, spitting, swearing and “la la’s”, are all thrown into the mix, to sound like a real English band. I really can’t stress how good every track actually is, it just needs to be heard. If you enjoyed the ‘Up The Bracket’ single, you will literally head to Oxfam and buy a pair of shit jeans. It’s that good. Even better, it’s not even one of the standout tracks.
I would name some of the best but it would be a waste of time. Go collect your dole, buy a bottle of milk, and steal this album.

Go on, they’d want you to.
