Nameless - ‘The Salt Flats’. Petrified Records. First band of this hopefully-to-become-a-regular-thing-like page is Cardiff’s Nameless, not to be confused with that other band, ‘No Use For A Name’. This isn’t technically a demo, it’s a promo single (taken from their forth-coming album of the same title), but I’ve never heard of them before so here goes. Nameless could easily fit into what the music press call the Scene With No Name (i.e. they’re loud and shouty and would rather gob on you than make conversation). The track opens with this seriously head denting jack-hammer drum and skid row guitar riff before letting rip into the song proper. The vocalist has been taking lessons from one Johnny Rotten, before he became old, fat and a fuckin embarrassment on nostalgia television shows. If I had to compare them to a band it would be along the frenetic lines of At The Drive-In, only less funk, and more punk. With more knob-twiddling and a ‘state of the art’ glossy video involving the band become computor generated futuristic warriors, this could be classed nu metal. But I wouldn’t go that far so I guess it’s hard core punk or whatever they call it. Half way through there’s some kind of Twilight Zone whine thing before coming on a bit System of a Down and heading back into that jack hammer drum beat. The kids in the black hoodies will love it.
