The Vines - Shepherds Bush 02.11.02 What's there to say about The Vines that hasn't been said? Whilst compliments and ecstatic reviews are frequent and widespread, a criticism is hard to find, and tonight, they exceed everyone's expectations. Support comes from American alt.rock trio, Nada Surf. They're not going to blow you away but an ear for melody and a tight rhythm section ensures a warm reaction from the crowd. Pushing past the 30 barrier, you get the feeling it's just too little too late. Shame, they could have been massive. The Vines stride onto the darkened stage and without even a quick word to the crowd, blast into 'Highly Evolved,' two minutes of grunge-rock perfection. It becomes apparent, almost instantly, that the Craig is restraining himself somewhat from his usual breakneck performance. Some seem upset that he hasn't already smashed his guitar but not to worry, after final song ‘Fuck The World,’ a brutal assault is launched on the drum kit, even Patrick finds time to put the boot in. During breaks, Craig will mutter incoherently into his microphone but once the songs are played, it's a different matter altogether. Backed up by a solid performance from his band mates, his vocals are superb. A soaring effort on '1969' is more than anyone can possibly ask and smiling faces disappear into the cold, west London night. Tonight is a triumph for the band of the moment. Phil South. |
