M*A*S*H Bloopers |
We all know there are bloopers on TV shows. We have collected items that we observed, and slip-ups from other lists, all of the sites are in our links section. We try not to copy word for word, but you might notice some things that seem to be from another site. Also, some things might be in here twice. We are sorry. We organized these in sections by character. There are also some "Other" catagories. Just because something is listed under a character's name, doesn't mean that character messed up. Most of the time, the actors just read the script. |
Order: Hawkeye Colonel Blake Frank Margaret Radar Father Mulcahy Klinger BJ Colonel Potter Charles Other:Things From the Future Other: Two or More People Other: Guest Stars |
Hawkeye -Hawkeye sometimes states he has a sister. In 'Dear Dad' , he ends his letter with "Say hello to mom and sis." His mother was dead and he had no sister. Also, in one episode he opens a package from home and it is a sweater he says his sister knitted for him -In "Potter's Retirement", at the Kentucky Derby party, Hawkeye is sitting on a sawhorse. Everyone cheers about something, and Alda nearly falls off the horse, taking the saddle with him! But, he catches himself just before he falls. -In "Give 'Em Hell, Hawkeye", in the next-to-final scene where Margaret's bedpan fountain is finally revealed, Hawkeye is in the Swamp finishing his letter to President Truman, yet in an earlier scene he had finished it, sealed it, and asked Kellye to send it out. -In "Hawk's Nightmare", Hawkeye is speaking with a patient about hometowns, and mentions that Crabapple Cove has a population of 3976. But in "Letters" when the fourth-graders wrote back to the 4077th, he said that there were only three hundred people in Crabapple Cove. -In one of the early scenes in the bar at the officer's club in Japan, Hawk is describing the MASH to Borelli and tells him "7 tables and no waiting". Watch any of the OR scenes and there are 4 tables: 4 surgeons, 4 tables. -In the beginning episodes of M*A*S*H, Hawkeye speaks of his mother as if she were alive, but later it is revealed that she died when he was young. -In all but one episode, Hawkeye was from Crab Apple Cove, Maine, but in one episode, it said he was from Vermont. -In the episode "The Kids" when Hawkeye & B.J. are setting up cots in their tent, B.J. states that Hawkeye is great at hospital corners. Then Hawkeye replies saying he used to work at a hotel, helping to put is wife through nursing school. It's well known that Hawkeye was never married before his tour in Korea or during. Henry -In an early episode Henry called his wife Mildred but in later episodes he called her Lorraine. -Henry was given a discharge because he had enough 'points' but the points system wasn't used for doctors in the Korean War. -In "Showtime" Henry finds out about the birth of his son Andrew; however, in "Abyssinia, Henry" Andrew is already playing the horn. In "Kim" Henry says he has two kids of his own, but by that time Andrew, his third child, had already been born. Frank -In "Sometimes You Hear The Bullet" when Henry presents Frank with a "Purple Heart" (Hawkeye replaced it with an earring) he calls him Franklin D. Burns but Franks middle name is Marion. -In I Hate A Mystery, early in the episode, Frank calls Hotlips "Major Houlihand" -In "Deal Me Out," while Frank is in the shower with the soldier, a shot goes off when the soldier had the gun to Frank's head. Frank would have been dead. Margaret -In "Bulletin Board" Margaret implies her father is dead, but in "Father's Day" he visits the camp. -Also in "Bulletin Board" there is a tug-o-war. Hotlips falls into the mud pit, and Hawkeye falls in after her. You can see Loretta Swit mouthing "Ow, Ow!" and looking as though she's in pain. Then you can see Alda mouth "Loretta, it's OK, it's OK" are they're both laughing along with everyone. Of course none of this can be heard, as the sounds of the cast laughing and acting crazy are dubbed over the scene. -During the scene with Frank and Margaret in her tent with him sitting on her bunk after he discovers a "general's star" in her bed, Hot Lips is standing in front of the bunk, and as Frank asks her about this star, her dialogue from frame to frame includes some that is clearly shot from a different time. For that split second frame, her hair and voice are completely different from the preceding and following frames. -Margaret wants to borrow $240 from Frank. She says she needs it as gift for "key" money for her younger sister, a captain, although in numerous other episodes Margaret states she is an only child. -In one episode, Margaret tells Col. Potter "You remind me of my father when he was alive." In the episode 'Father's Day,' Al Houlihan is a guest at the 4077th. -In the episode "Der Tag" Frank is missing, B.J. asks Radar if he looked in Margaret's tent. He replied saying no because their was a big padlock on the door. Minutes later when she returns to camp, Margaret walks right in her tent without unlocking the padlock. -One episode in the fifth season opens with Margaret asleep in her tent with the record player playing. Yet in one episode some time when Charles was their she asked to borrow some of his records for her record player that she recieves in the mail during the episode. Radar -In one episode Radar is seen showing Henry his new tattoo, later in the series Hawkeye persuades Radar not to have a tattoo. -Radar tells the lamb he would never eat him, like all the others want to. However, in the episode 'The Long John Flap', Radar trades his coveted long johns to the cook for a leg of lamb with mint jelly and promptly cancels a night with a nurse and heads out of the mess tent to eat the lamb. -After everyone has fallen into the mud, Radar on his knees can be heard saying "choppers" but you never see his lips move. -Hawkeye, Radar, and B.J. steal a jeep after someone takes theirs. On their way back to the 4077th they meet some Koreans coming down the road. Radar wants to give them some gum but remembers he left it in his jacket which was left the other jeep. He later begins chewing on Chiclets that he takes from his jacket pocket. Later still the three come upon some soldiers, get attacked by mortars, and Hawkeye asks Radar to give a soldier a Chiclet. Radar does. -Radar could be seen drinking in several early episodes such as "Tuttle" and "Chief Surgeon Who?"; however, in "End Run" from season 5, Radar takes one sip of the home-made hooch from the still and is taken by surprise. Radar is also strongly affected by a sip of liquor in "The Price" and "Goodbye Radar." Also, in the early seasons Radar smokes cigars in episodes such as "Chief Surgeon Who?" However, in "Fade Out, Fade In" Col. Potter shows Radar how to smoke a cigar for the first time. Father Mulcahy -In "Blood and Guts", Clayton Kibbee asks Father Mulcahy if he knows the Pope, and the father responds with "By reputation only." Yet in "The Smell of Music" he tells Hawkeye and B. J. that he had once dined al fresco with the Pope. -The problem with the good Father and his sister is that their names change. In most episodes, his name is given as "Francis John Patrick Mulcahy"; however, in some episodes it's different. In "The Pilot" his name is given as "John P. Mulcahy"; in "Dear Sis" Hawkeye calls him "John Patrick Francis Mulcahy." Mulcahy's sister is normally referred to as "Katherine" or "Sister Maria Angelica," but in "The Most Unforgettable Characters" from season 5 she is called "Sister Theresa." (or was Theresa just from the orphanage?) Klinger -Winchester dreams he is performing magic. They show all the other characters applauding, and Klinger is wearing earrings. After they show Charles again, they show the other cast members. Klinger is not wearing earrings anymore. -In Your Retention, Please, members of the camp comment on the fact that Klinger is riding Sophie in the buff, but you can clearly see that Klinger's wearing shorts. -In one episode in season 9, Klinger's serial number is given with "RA" at the beginning which stood for Regular Army and Klinger definitely was not Regular Army, he was a draftee. BJ -In "Potter's Retirement" BJ and Hawkeye are in The Swamp. In one shot BJ's scarf is hanging down, in the next shot, a split second later, it is over his shoulder and in the third shot it's again hanging down. Colonel Potter -When Radar gives Col. Potter a horse in Dear Mildred it was referred to as 'he'. In later episodes it was given the name Sophie and from that point it was always said to be female although it was obviously meant to be the same horse. -In the episode 'A War For All Seasons' Col. Potter is seen at the end of 1951 but he didn't arrive at the camp until Sept. 1952. -In his first episode, Colonel Potter asks Father Mulcahy if he does a good Methodist sermon. However, in the episode "Period of Adjustment", when Father Mulcahy is describing Radar's former clumsiness as a company clerk, the Colonel asks "You wouldn't lie to a Presbyterian, would you?" -It was known that Col. Potter lived in Missouri. But in one episode he says he lives in Nebraska. -In "The M*A*S*H Olympics" Penobscott arrives and Potter informs him that he made it in time for the last 2 events. Potter had to of been a physic or fixed the game to know that, because the last event was a special tiebreaker event which only occurs if there's a tie. -As Radar unpacks the colonel's picture frames, he asks where his wife's picture should go on the desk and Potter replies: "no, no...she always goes on the right hand side of my desk." In many other episodes to follow, you can clearly see her picture on Potter's left hand side of his desk. -In "Dear Mildred," the Potters are about to celebrate their 27th wedding anniversary; however, in "Images" Potter mentions his upcoming 38th wedding anniversary. Then, in "Point of View" Potter says they've been married for 35 years. In "Too Many Cooks," Margaret indicates the Potters have been married for 40 years. -In the episode "The Light That Failed" Klinger had to steal a light bulb from above Potter's desk, because they had no others. Yet only a few scenes later, Potter had one above his desk and the supply truck had not arrived yet? Charles -In "It Happened One Night" Hawkeye needs a B-positive blood donor for a patient, and Klinger says that he's B-positive. In "C*A*V*E", Klinger mentions that he and Charles have the same blood type, which would of course mean that Charles is also B-positive. But in "Life Time" they need some AB-negative, and Charles says that he is that type. -In "Dear Sis," (I think) when Father Mulcahy goes into Radar's office to bless a cow, Charles is in there, fully dressed. He claims to have been waiting 16 hours to make a call. He just came out of surgery, and when Radar and Mulcahy left the changing room, Charles was changing. Other: Things From the Future -The 'Godzilla' series of films were often mentioned in the show, but they weren't actually made 'till after the Korean War. "The Blob" was also mentioned but this wasn't made until 1958. -In the episode "Movie Tonight" Radar did an impersonation of John Wayne. The impersonation he did was a quote from the movie "Mclintock" however, the movie wasn't made until 1963, ten years after the Korean War ended. -In the episode "Depressing News". Alan Alda and Mike Farrell are walking into frame in the scene where Hawk and BJ discover the huge shipment of tongue depressors, Alda's feet are visible for about 2 seconds and he has bright blue shoes from the early '80's on. -In one episode people can be seen drinking from beer cans that are clearly aluminum, but these weren't available in the '50's. -The Korean War took place from 1950-1953, when there were only 48 states (Alaska and Hawaii were added in 1958 and 1959). Yet every time the flag is shown in the compound, it has 50 stars. -In "Der Tag" Radar is seen with an Avengers comic which wasn't around until the sixties. -In "The Incubator" Hawkeye and Trapper are sitting down with the base commander when he says that with a few days notice, he can get anything, even a B-52 But B-52 wasn't in service until after the war. -In "Strange Bedfellows" a Korean soldier is in the bed next to an American. The Korean offers him his candy bar because the American gave him his blanket. On the bar, you can clearly see the UPC code, but these weren't around until the '70s. -Radar states that his mother's boyfriend takes her to bingo night in his Nash Metropolitan. The Korean war ended in July 27, 1953, the Nash Metropolitan wasn't introduced in the US until March 1954. -In Sometimes You Hear the Bullet, Nancy Griffin and Hawkeye are talking and she says she found a dirty magazine behind Aerosmith, but Aerosmith wasn't around in 1950. -In one episode, Klinger said something like "I'd rather wear hula hoops in my ears, which weren't around in the Korean War (the hula hoop, not Klinger's ears). Also, in an episode after that, Klinger tries to get Winchester to finance an invention just like the hoola hoop. -In one episode Winchester commented, "Montana, the Big Sky Country." Yet for the Korean War and many years after, Montana was known as the "Treasure State." The "Big Sky Country didn't come along until after Guthrey wrote the book in the 60's. -In one episode a UH-1B"Huey" is suspended from the ceiling of Henry's office. The "Huey" of course wasn't used in the Korean War, but rather in the Vietnam War! Other: Two or more people -In "The Is Nothing Like a Nurse" there are a few scenes where Trapper and Hawkeye are in the officer's club having a drink. In the first scene of them at the bar this blooper occurs, right after Hawkeye gets the "arid" martinis. Trapper is talking to someone on the left of the screen and Hawkeye is sitting on the right of the screen, on the edge. As Trapper is talking to the other person, Hawkeye sips the martini. As he does so, he spills some! You can actually see it on the bar. Alda nonchalantly looks down at his spill and Trapper's still talking. Before it's time for Alda's line he casually wipes his lips/chin off, as I'm sure some of the spilled martini got on him. -Both Radar and Klinger are quoted as having 2 different army serial numbers. -In Der Tag when Frank comes up missing (he's at the aid station with the toe tag), Radar looks for him in the swamp, Hawkeye suggests that he try Margaret's tent, but Radar says there's a padlock on it. Later, when Margaret gets back to the 4077, Frank immediately escorts her to her tent, and they open the door with ease. So what happened to the lock? Other: Guest Stars -In "Post Op" a soldier arrives at the camp and introduces himself as Sergeant Attias of the Turkish Brigade, but he is wearing a corporal's uniform. -In "The Ringbanger" when Trapper and Hawkeye take Buzz back to his tent they suggest he drinks the glass of milk he "ordered," The next scene shows Radar sneaking the glass of milk onto the table from behind the tent, but if you look closely the glass of milk was already sitting there! -In "End Run," Hawkeye tells Frank that the soldier who "slipped on some Jell-O" was PFC (Private First Class) Kornhaus. But Kornhaus was only a private. -In "Iron Guts Kelly" a General dies while visiting Margaret. At one point, his aide refers to him as "Major General Iron Guts Kelly", but other references and the three stars on his helmet clearly identify him as a Lieutenant General. -In his first appearance, Sidney Freedman is referred to as Milton Freedman. -As everyone is in the mess tent watching a Shirley Temple film, a fight breaks out between Klinger and Zale. Mulcahey comes in to intervene, but right before this you can see at the left, outside of the tent is an MP, just sitting there watching it all, with his back to them! And as the fight continues, the MP is now standing to the left of the mess tent's back door outside (and the MP is hidden behind this door) and then Mulcahey gets pushed outside and as the left door swings outward for him to go bumbling through, the MP is forced to move to where you can see him again, outside the tent, waiting to enter the stage for his scene. The mess tent "walls" are a mesh screen type so anybody standing off stage could be seen if they were not careful, as this scene demonstrates. -In "The Smell of Music," after Colonel Potter talks Saunders out of commiting suicide with the gas mask in the O.R., they never turn off the gas before they leave O.R. -The doctors and nurses use the drug Levophed in the 8th season, but in "Birthday Girls," an episode from the 10th season, Charles demonstrates the use of the drug for the first time. -In the episode "I Hate a Mystery" Hawkeye calls a bunch of names into the Mess Hall. When they arrive all are there, and so is Ho Jon who's name wasn't called? Yet he was the one being charged with the crime. |
