Sunkoshi The river of gold. Its one of the longest white rafting river in Nepal. Starting from about 2 hrs away from Kathamandu, the bus rides up to the river bank. From there onwards, camping for 10 nights by the riverbank is something of a thrill for me as a city-dweller. Finally, I get some real experience in camping! The river ranges from class 3 to class 5 rapids amongst the most dangerous is Harakapur II (the first one was already destroyed by the landslide in the last season's moonsoon). Followed by Dead Man Eddy, Rhino Rock... etc, but the last day was the deadliest with Tamaur river cited as "expert" level and not for the beginners... with continuous rapids for 2km in a stretch, you really need a guide who is not only experienced but enough guts! :) cheers! Gosaikund lakes is a scared place for the Hindus as the shrine of Shiva can be found at 4310m. In August, the devotees of Shiva will make this pilgrimage to cleanse their bodies in these waters. Larebinyak Pass 4610m is a good place to see the Annapurna South and Machepuchera. It takes 8 days to finish the trek. It is indeed a pilgrimage for us as well, the path less taken is filled with exciting and sometime unforgettable scenes. The terrain is definitely more challenging than ABC. Sikkim is the lastest state of India. It had been one a Kingdom like Bhutan, but India is it's protectorate. It is a 6 day trek up to Dzongri to see the magnificent Kangchenjangan - 3rd highest peak in the world. The terrain is relatively - all the way up and back trek down. The day walk is usually 6 hours. Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) Utterly, the most popular place in Nepal. The path are well paved and maintained, but donkey dung is found along the way. It takes 7 days to reach the basecamp and another 6 days to finish to entire trek. 13 days walk is not for the faint hearted. The day walk will average 7 hours. :) Tatry Mountains - Zakopane Zakopane is in Poland where the highest of the Tatry mountains exist. Although only 2000m in altitude, we already hit the rocks! A good pair of trek shoes with a HARD sole is needed. No porters here and you have to carry yr own bags! Good Luck. |
