Coming Feb. 26th thru March 5th - CARNAVAL - One of Mexico´s largest celebrations of Carnaval is held here in Merida. If you are going to be in the area you shouldn't miss it. Lots of different events and parades are planned. Here´s the offical list. Feb 26th - Burning of Bad Humor - The Reign of King Momo officially commences with this ceremony. The ceremony wil be followed by fireworks. Feb. 27th - Children's Parade - The first parade is that of young children, which is one of the most charming events, eagerly awaited year after year. Feb. 28th - Corso Parade - First parade in the competition for Best Float and Best Group. After the parade begins the dance with many nationally and internationally famous groups. Mar. 1st - Saturday for Fantasy - All floats and groups participate in the parade, starting off the festival which will continue until dawn. Mar 2nd - Sunday of Bachata - The party starts at midday with a parade, followed by music provided by different groups and singers. Mar. 3rd - Regional Monday - Tonight Merida dresses in beautiful costumes of the mestizas, dancing jarana to Yucatecan music. Mar. 4th - Battle of the Flowers - The parade begins with a battle of flowers with the public and then the dancing continues until dawn. Mar. 5th - The Funeral of Juan Carnaval - This ceremony offically closes the festivities of Carnaval for another year. This is one of the funniest and best attended ceremonies. |
