Akumal & Yal-Ku Lagoon - Looking for a great place to snorkel, Yal-Ku is probably about the best place on the mainland that you can snorkel at. This protected lagoon has many different marine animals to view including turtles, stingrays, parrot fish as well as many other types of fish. The upper end of the lagoon offers many rock formations and the lower end has some of the best coral formations along the coast. Tour includes transpotration, admission and snorkel equipment at Yal-Ku and lunch at La Buena Vida. Cost $62.50 US per person. Tulum -Tulum is a wonderful Mayan city that is located in the coast. It is the only Mayan city known that has walls built around it. The ruins themself, although not as large as Chichen Itza, are very intresting. Another thing that is great about visiting Tulum is the view from atop the cliffs. It is one of the best views of the Caribbean Sea in all the Riviera Maya. Tours are usually compined with a trip to Xel-Ha in the afternoon. Xel-Ha - This is the largest natural aquarium in the area if not in the world. Here you will find all kinds of marine life from large parrotfish, tuna, stingrays and even baracuda as weel as many other native fish and wildlife. They also have some nice cenotes to snorkel in as well as rubber tubes to float down one of the rivers that feeds into the Caribbean. There is also a dolphin swim program here which runs $55US for a 30 min. session. You can combine this with the Tulum tour or spend a whole day here. Xcaret -Nature's sacred paradise, Xcaret has so much to offer. This eco-archaeological park has a wonderful sheltered bay perfect for snorkeling. Or you can check out one of the underground rivers. Also they offer the Swim with Dolphin. Also there is Xcaret at night which is a wonderful show of the Mayan culture. A wonderful place to visit. Sian Ka'an Biosphere - The name "Sian Ka'an" is Mayan for "where the sky is born" and the Biosphere Reserve lives up to its name. Sian Ka'an is 1.8 million acres of tropical forests, marshes, mangroves, lagoons, bays, and coral reefs. The coastal marshes, mangroves and beaches provide shelter to some 350 species of birds. Roseate spoonbills, rare parrots, keel-billed toucans, ibises, flamingos, pelicans and great blue herons can all be seen in the skies above Sian Ka'an. The forest and mangrove areas are full with a wide variety of flora and fauna including: jabiru stork, jaguars, howler monkeys, miniature deer, tapirs, ocelots, crocodiles and the endangered sea manatee, totaling 103 registered mammals and 800 plant species. Also on the tour you have a chance of seeing doplhins in their natural habitat (roughly 70% of the time dolphins are seen on this tour). This is a great all day tour. Prices start at 750 pesos per person. Coba - Inland from Tulum and nestled in dense jungle is Coba, a once grand city whose name means "water stirred by wind," in honor of the exquisite lakes nearby. Covering nine square miles, it is one of the largest Mayan cities in existence. At 138 feet the Nohoch Mul is the tallest pyramid on the Yucatan Peninsula. From its summit you can see lakes and a carpet of jungle spreading to the horizon. A smaller structure, the La Iglesia pyramid stands 79 feet in height. It houses eight stelae and circular altars of the Macanxoc group. Combined with the "Conjunto de las Pinturas" (The Painted Complex), these are among Coba’s most breathtaking sites. Nature enthusiasts can appreciate the surrounding jungle, abundant with parrots, toucans, spider monkeys, a variety of orchids and giant blue Morpho butterflies. ATV Jungle Tour - Want to have some fun on an ATV thru a wonderful tropical forest, then this is a great tour. You will get to ride on a ATV 4 wheeler to visit cenotes, caves and a beatiful beach. This tour last for about 2 1/2 hours and is located just about 5 miles south of Playa del Carmen. Diving - Playa del Carmen has some of the best diving in the world. Lots of beautiful coral and marine life. There are also great cenote and cavern dives in the area. If you are planning on going diving Playa Mexico recommends Abyss Dive Shop located on the beach next to the Blue Parrot. Extreme Snorkel - The newest way to snorkel in the Riviera Maya. This is located at Marina Maroma(KM 55 Cancun-Tulum). All you have to do is hold on to the Aqua Tow and enjoy the wonderful reefs. No swimming invloved. Great way to experience the reefs. The marina also offers Trimaran tours, horseback riding and ATV tours. Nohoch - An exciting 4x4 adventure into the lush jungle. Enjoy a snorkeling expedition into Nohoch, the world's largest fresh-water cave and tunnel system. Afterwards journey to the beautiful bay of Punta Soliman for a kayak tour and snorkeling experience on the Mexican Caribbean reef system. This tour includes: Mayan lunch, drinks, all equipment and guide. It is offered by Alltournative Tours. Kantun-Chi - A wonderful centote, the meaning of the Mayan word Kantun-Chi is Yellow Stoned Mouth. Admire stalagmites and stalagtites that were formed thousands of years ago. You can swim, snorkel and skuba dive inside the cenotes. There are 4 different cenotes located at the park. Rancho Loma Bonita - Have fun on a horseback ride thru lush vegetation and a swim in the Caribbean Sea or take an adventure driving a 4-wheeler thru the exciting jungle and pristine lake. The tour includes, ranch food, drinks, donkey polo and more.
