The 727 Km MANALI-LEH road had been serving as an important land approach to the area. Open to traffic from around mid-June to early October, this high road traverses up-land desert plateau Rupshu whose altitude ranges from 3660 m to 4570 m. The other land approach to Leh is from the Kashmir Valley via the 473 Km SRINAGAR-LEH road which remains open for traffic from early June to November.
