A Witches cauldron, broom, and wand are tools that have been over played by the media. But, these are tools that we use.
No the cauldron is not for brewing evil potions in, but often for mixing herbs, putting water in for a spell such as "drowning" a piece of paper for a banishing rite and the like. Most people think of a huge metal pot that could hold a person. Again not nessasary. True some Witches do go to the extreme, but most have small cauldrons. Mine personally is a stainless steel bowl with a base about 4 inches in diameter. Just big enough for mixing herbs in.
A Witches broom. Give me strength when it comes to this one. Often when I tell people I am a Wiccan, well most don't know the term, so Witch, they ask if I fly around on a broom. HOW DID THIS STUPID THING GET STARTED!!! Okay, sorry, it just royally bugs me. No, Witches use their brooms to sweep away negativity. It is a purifing tool often used before a rite to make sure the area is clean of negativity. Simple as that. Personally I have a cheap little one that I bought around Halloween/Samhain and truthfully I never use it. I cleanse by other means. Even though I should sweep, I tend not to like to drag the thing out because of the stereotype.
A wand! The first thing that comes to mind when I hear the word wand it Cinderella's Fairy/Faerie Godmother going "Bibbity Bobity Boo" and changing things around. NO NO NO! A wand is simply used for directing energies around your circle. An athame or your index finger could also serve this purpose. Again, personally, I have a wand, handmade from a cutting of a rose bush (be sure to thank the plant if you take part of it) from the house I grew up in. I use it more often than not, but again it often doesn't feel quiet right.
Okay, now the reason I started this blooming page! You do not have to go out and spend a fortune on your tools!!! I can not stress this enough! Unlike the humans who run standardized religions, the God and Goddess do not want your money! I have seen cauldrons in stores and catalogs selling for over 100 dollars! Are you out of your mind!? I payed a buck for mine and it works wonderfully. Here's the thing and any smart Witch will tell you the same thing- check thrift stores! I love these places! You can find all kinds of goodies at thrift stores. Good candleholders, wine glasses or a chalice, bowls, things that you just think are neat. Look around and have fun. Plus, don't stress. You will find what you are looking for when you are supposed to. It took me a year to find my cauldron, given I wasn't really looking at the time, but there it was.
