Crest and Motto
This crest is attributed to the Earls of Galloway, who hold the chieftainship of the Stewarts.
The inscription 'Virescit vulnere virtus' (Courage grows strong at the wound) is the motto of the Stewarts.
During the reign of King Alexander III (1241-1285), King Haakon of Norway attempted to conquer Scotland. When the barefoot Norsemen tried a sneak attack at night on the Scottish camp at Largs, they stepped on thistles. The Norsemen cried out in pain, alerting the Scots, who rebuffed the attack. The Norsemen withdrew and the thistle became the Scottish national symbol.
The first seat of the Stewart family, the Royal Stewarts, resided in Renfrewshire, Scotland. Other branches of the Stewarts settled in the Western Highlands and Perthshire, Scotland, during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, where they became founders of distinct clans of the name. Of these clans, the principal were the Stewarts of Appin (Lorne), the Stewarts of Athole, and the Stewarts of Galloway (Balquhidder), from which all other Stewarts have derived.  It is unknown from which clan our family of Stewarts originated.
