THE ACCULTURATE

This story is both my longest story sold to date (novellette-length) and the most distant fuiture story I've written, publishing or otherwise. It goes some distance towards establishing the local astropolitical layout of one of the "active" phases in my Mythology of the Future timeline. In addition the aformentioned milestones, "The Acculture" is a story close to my heart. I enjoy all my stories, of course, but the basic idea for the story has been laying on my mind for several years now, ever since I first heard the term acculturation is an introductory Cultural Anthropology class. As such, the worldbuilding present in the story stems directly from my academic background; it's always pleasing to be able to combine my interests in such a fashion.

The anthology this story appears in deals with concepts of bondage, restraint and imprisonment, and the stories, poems and artwork within use alien societies as a vehicle for telling their tales. My contribution revolves around a species which has developed a social

system of status and relationship so complex
that it defies comprehension for anybody who
hasn't been raised amongst these social systems. When the protagonist of the tales runs afoul of local laws, it is to just such an individual - the titular acculturate - to whom he must turn if he's to have any hope of salvation.
