THE DROWNING OF NEW ORLEANS
"The Drowning of New Orleans" in "Quakes and Storms: A Disaster Relief Anthology", Wuesthoff, Macey Bagget and Pacione, Nickolaus A. editors. Lake Fossil Press, 2005.
Like "Teratesla" before it, "Drowning..." is a near-future tale in my "Mythology of the Future" timeline. To forestall the inevitable question, this story was written early in 2005, months before Hurricane Katrina made the title and thematics of the story eerily topic. In this accounting, set in the late 21st century, the sea levels have risen so high due to global warming that massive walls have been constructed to keep the water out of coastal cities like New Orleans. As the title suggests, the wall is breached and the floodwaters pour in. The tale specifically follows the stories of three individuals as they try and find their way through the chaos that results.

The anthology itself--made up of both true tales, non-genre fiction and
horror stories in addition to my sci-fi offering--was created by Nickolaus Pacione in response to the Boxing Day Tsunami of 2004, but unfortunately 2005 has hardly been lacking in natural disasters requiring relief. Copies of the book can be purchased from
Lulu.com; revenues from the sales of the book itself will go to the Red Cross.
