                                  Synopsis
About 0541 Mexico Central Time on October 31, 1979, a Western Air Lines DC-10-10 oprated as flight 2605 and crashed at Mexico City Benito Juarez International Airport.  Flight 2605 was making an approach to the airport in reported VFR conditions when it touched down in the dirt and on the left edge of Runway 23 Left, which was reported closed to traffic.  A missed approach was initiated.  During the maneuver, the aircraft struck the first of loaded dump trucks that had been positioned on the runway.  The aircraft continued to fly for approximately 28 seconds before impacting two airport buildings, ground equipment and an adjacent neighborhood.
An "extensive" investigation was conducted guided by Servicio a La Navegacion en el Espacio Aereo Mexicano,(the Mexican equivlant of the FAA).  Others invited to participate were:
The US National Transportation Safety Board
The US Federal Aviation Administration
Western Air Lines Inc.
McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Co.
Association of Flight Attendants
The Air Lines Pilot Association.

Because US investigators were withheld from making a complete and thorough examination of the aircraft wreckage, crash site and airport facilities, it will never be accurately determined to what extent the aircraft or the approach facilities contributed to this disaster.  The final verdict of (SENEAM) was "Error de piloto... a lie that has lasted for more than twenty years until now.
