KLONDIKE DERBY
The Klondike Derby is a Winter Camporee which incorporates the use of sleds into camporee type competitions. It is usually held in February at Pinecrest or the Eagle Mountain Resort on Hwy 80. Klondike Sledge Plan
All entries in the Best Sledge Contest will be judged for approved length of 6 feet long and 18 inches wide. The drawing should be self explanatory. Your own design will be accepted. Use your imagination. However, after research in our Public Libraries, the accompanying sketch is authentic and we ought to be the "real McCoy." Paint your sledge bright colors -- varnish the bottom of the runners -- then was before use. The Eskimos iced their runners. Accessories may be added -- a canvas snow curtain as a snow guard front and sides will keep equipment dry. Use screws in place of nails, drill first to avoid splitting.
NOTE:
* SLED WEIGHT 50# MINIMUM WHEN LOADED
* Units will need to carry materials for all events in the sled.
* One Scout will be required to ride IN the sled for the "Race Event".

MISCELLANEOUS
Registration is usually around $6.00 per person and you are invited to camp in the snow Friday and/or Saturday nights (limited to 150 people), or rent a cabin nearby. Your unit DOES NOT need a sled or stay overnight to participate. You can come up just for the day on Saturday and have fun in the snow.
A tour permit is required, even if you come up just for the day.
ALL VEHICLES, INCLUDING FOUR WHEEL DRIVES, SHOULD HAVE SNOW CHAINS. This event will go one, snow, rain or shine. The only thing that could cancel this event is a long-term road closure by Cal Trans. So get out your tools, build or fix up that sled, polish us your Scout/Snow skills, and beat a path to the annual Klondike Derby.
For more information call Marcus Krause at 510-538-2158.
THE STAFF REQUESTS THAT EACH UNIT BRING 5 GALLONS OF DRINKING WATER TO BE USED AT THE "GENERAL STORE" FOR REFRESHMENTS.

SAMPLE KLONDIKE EVENTS
MT. WHITNEY RESCUE
While skiing, one of your patrol members fell and has a broken leg, injuries to his head,
and minor cuts. Using what items you have (First Aid Kit, blanket, poles, etc.), your
patrol will apply first aid, explain what you are doing, and why. Then you will carry the
victim from point "A" to point "B" and back. If you drop the victim,
another injury will occur.
20 nuggets possible
ANCHORAGE RUN
Using the "snowshoe material" provided, your patrol will construct two sets of
snowshoes. In relay fashion, each patrol member will have to travel 50 feet and back. You
will get two nuggets for each pair of snowshoes you make, and two nuggets for
each member completing the run. If you fall, or a snowshoe comes off, you will lose one
nugget. Patrols with less than 8 people may have members go twice.
20 nuggets possible
VALDEX OIL RECOVERY
Using what items you have in your sled, your patrol must move a container of highly toxic
oil from point "A" to point "B" and back. Successful completion of
each direction will earn your patrol ten nuggets. If you drop the container, it
will spill and cost you two nuggets. If a patrol member touches the container, he
is out, and that will cost your two nuggets.
20 nuggets possible
PT. BARROW HEATER
Using what items you have (wood, scout-made fire starter, matches, flint & steel, mess
kit), your patrol needs to start a fire and boil two cups of water. Three nuggets
for a well constructed fire, three nuggets for boiling the water, ten nuggets
for starting the fire with flint & steel, seven nuggets for starting the fire
with one match, four nuggets for using two or more matches, and four nuggets
for using only material you brought from home.
20 nuggets possible
SITKA PUZZLE
Using what items you have (four pieces of rope), your patrol will be required to tie the following eight knots:
Clove Hitch
Timber Hitch
Two Half Hitches
Bowline
Sheet Bend
Sheepshank
Square knot
Taut line hitch
connecting the ropes together from point "A" to point "B". No patrol member may tie more than two knots. Your patrol will recieve two nuggets for each correctly tied knot, and four nuggets if everyone wears gloves.
20 nuggets possible
PINECREST LAKE GOLD RUSH
A bucket with twenty nuggets is floating in the "frozen waters". With your poles, ropes, available materials, and lashing skills, you need to retrieve the bucket. For each scout who touches the water and gets "hypothermia", you lose two nuggets. For each scout not utilized to retrieve the bucket, you lose two nuggets.
