The Files of Joshua Kokasashu

Jessie sat at the kitchen table, sipping her coffee and reading the newspaper.

"Mommy!" a child's voice shouted. A little boy with green eyes and blueish hair came running through the hallway, into the kitchen. "Mommy! Guess what?" the boy shouted.

"What, Josh?" Jessie asked.

"Today we get to paint pictures! I can't wait to go to school!" he said, very excited.

"Well we've gotta leave in ten minutes, so I suggest you get dressed," Jessie said, noting that he still had on his green Charizard pajamas.

"Okay!" he said and ran back down the hallway. Jessie smiled.

"Honey?" a voice said, coming from the living room.

"Yes, dear?" she asked.

"Would you mind driving me to work after you take Joshua to school? My truck is still broken down," he said.

"Sure, Kevin." About ten minutes later, everyone piled into Jessie's car.

"Daddy! Guess what? Today we get to paint pictures cuz it's Friday! We get to paint pictures every friday!" Josh said and grinned. "And Kayli always paints next to ME." Kevin grinned.

"Really? Do you like her?" he asked.

"Yeah, she's pretty nice. Caleb sits next to me too."

"Okay we're here! Have fun at school, Josh, I'll pick you up at 3:10," Jessie said.

"Bye Josh," Kevin said.

"Bye mom! Bye dad!" Josh shouted as he ran up the sidewalk with his friends Caleb and Justin.

"Isn't he adorable?" Jessie said as they drove away.

"I know..." Kevin said.

"So, tonight's still okay with you? I've got the babysitter ready, and I've got any papers they might need," Jessie said, looking at Kevin.

"Yeah. Just pick me up at four," Kevin said. Jessie nodded.

***

Jessie picked Joshua up at 3:10, like she said she would.

"Josh, you're going to stay with a babysitter tonight, remember? Me and daddy will be back in time to put you into bed. You know where we're going, right?" Joshua nodded.

"Yep! I'm soooo excited!" Joshua said and smiled. Jessie and Joshua walked into the house. "How long will you be home until the babysitter comes?" Josh asked.

"I should be home until about 3:40, so about 15 minutes. I have to go pick up your Daddy. Remember Brock? His sister Mary is going to babysit you," Jessie said.

"Really??? I like Brock! He's soooooo nice!" Joshua said.

"Yeah, he said he might stop by," Jessie said. Suddenly, a Vulpix came running through, being chased by an Arcanine.

"Hey!! Don't chase my Vulpix!" Joshua shouted, and laughed.

"Vulllll!!" Vulpix said and jumped up into Joshua's arms.

"Have you thought of a name for her yet?" Jessie asked.

"No... but I'm still thinking. I can't wait 'till I'm 10, and I can become a real Pokémon Master!" Joshua said. Jessie laughed.

"Oh really?" she asked, remembering chasing around Ash, Misty, and Brock (and after time Tracey) for their pesky Pikachu with James. She sighed, and wondered why.

"Okay, I have to go now. Mary's here," Jessie said. There was a knock on the door.

"Come in," Jessie said. The door opened, and there stood Mary, with Brock right behind her.

"Brock!!!!" Joshua said and ran up to him. "Brock! Lemmie see your Ninetails again!! Please?? I got a Vulpix and I need help naming her. Will you help me?" Josh said.

"Woah, slow down buddy! I'll get Ninetails out later, and I'll help you with Vulpix too, but first I've gotta talk to your mom," Brock said.

"Okay!" Josh said. Brock and Jessie stepped outside, while Mary stayed with Joshua.

"Joshua was adopted, right?" Brock asked.

"Yeah," Jessie said.

"And he's James' adopted son, right?" Brock said.

"KEVIN's adopted son," Jessie said.

"And today your going to go adopt a daughter?" he asked.

"Yes."

"And she's going to be Kevin's, right?" Brock asked.

"Yes." Brock nodded.

"Okay, just wondering." Jessie eyed Brock.

"Why were you wondering?" Jessie asked.

"Because. I wasn't sure if... er... I dunno." With that, Brock stepped back inside, and waved at Jessie before he closed the door. She got into her car and went to pick up Kevin.

After that, she drove to the adoption center. They walked up to the counter.

"Are you looking to adopt a child or a Pokémon?" the lady at the counter asked. Jessie read her nametag. 'Misty' was all it said. She looked up, and saw a larger version of the Misty she used to chase around. She gasped a little, but nobody seemed to notice.

"Child," Jessie said.

"Male or female?"

"Female."

"Alright. May I see your papers?" Jessie and Kevin each layed down some papers, Kevin a few more than Jessie. Misty looked at the papers, gasped a little, and looked from Jessie to Kevin.

"Forget about it, Misty," Jessie said.

"I never thought YOU'd turn good, Jess," Misty said.

"Yeah, whatever. I said forget about it. We want to adopt a female child, mmkay? That's why I'm here. And it's your job to help me," Jessie said.

"You're right..." Misty said.

"Ya no crap I'm right. Now lets get on with this, I have a son to come home to," Jessie said. Misty looked through the papers and set them on the counter next to her.

"So you want a girl? Any certain things you'd like about her? Special hair or eye color? Anything?" Misty asked.

"Well, I think we'd like her to have brown eyes and blonde hair, if it's at all possible," Jessie said. She looked at Kevin, who nodded. Misty kept on looking at Kevin, too, and he soon got annoyed by it.

"Would you stop looking at me?" Kevin demanded. Misty looked shocked.

"Okay sorry..." she said. She walked to her computer, typed something, and came back.

"I've found a match. Her name is Lily," Misty said.

"But... I'm not sure if you'd want her." Jessie and Kevin looked at her.

"What? Why not?" Jessie asked.

"Well, she's a newborn..."

"That doesn't matter. Joshua was a newborn when I got him," Jessie said.

"And... I don't think you'd like her real parents."

Jessie gave her a weird look, and said, "Who the heck would be her real parents that I would care?" Misty looked at her paper again. "Well, her parents were... wait. Are you sure you wanna know?" Jessie nodded. "If it's that bad, tell me!" Misty sighed.

"Her parents were... Cheyanne and Derek Kokaji." Jessie looked at her.

"You mean Kosaburo and Yamato?" Misty nodded.

"Yes. They changed their names." Jessie took Kevin aside, and after about 10 minutes, they came back.

"We'll adopt Lily, then." They filled out form after form, were asked a million questions (less than last time, though, since they had adopted once), and finally got to see Lily.

She was a tiny newborn, laying in the nursery in a crib, crying and crying for someone to comfort her. Jessie's concerned face softened, and she picked up little Lily. She cradled her in her arms, and soon Lily stopped crying. Misty had been right, she had brown eyes and soft blonde hair.

"They should be happy someone they know adopted their little baby. I guess they just couldn't take care of her." Jessie smiled at Lily. "I'm gonna be the best mommy you'll ever have," she cooed to Lily, as she fell asleep.

"So, here's your papers back. I take it you have a car seat to get her home in?" Misty said.

"Of course, Misty, we're not that dumb!" Jessie said. Kevin took the papers, and Jessie took Lily. Kevin didn't notice that one of the papers fell on the floor. They walked out the door.

"Wait! You dropped this!" Misty said, but they didn't hear.

***

Lily was still asleep when they got home.

"Aww!! She's so cute!" Brock and Mary said.

"I wanna see my sister! I wanna see my sister!" Joshua yelled excitedly. Jessie leaned down to let him see.

"She's cute! Is she really my sister now?" he asked.

"Yes, she is. You'd better go say goodbye to Brock and Mary before they leave," Kevin said. Joshua made a mad dash to Brock.

"Thank you Brock! Fire Princess loves her name!" he said, as Vulpix (now known as Fire Princess) lept into his arms. Brock ruffled his hair.

"Be good, buddy," he said and walked out the door.

"Bye!" Mary said before following him.

"Mommy! The phone is ringing!" Joshua yelled.

"I'll get it," Kevin said. He picked it up.

"Misty? What do you want?" he demanded.

"Some of your papers fell on the floor as you left. Would you like to come back to get them?" she asked.

"Yeah, I'll come. But I'll have to take Joshua with me. I hope that's okay," he replied.

"Sure is. Bye." Kevin hung up the phone.

"C'mon, big guy, we're gonna go get some of Daddy's papers from the adoption center," Kevin said, talking to Josh.

"Okay! Can Fire Princess come with?" he asked.

"Sure." Joshua picked up his Vulpix, and the Arcanine followed them to the car.

***

They got to the adoption center and Kevin and Joshua got out of the car. Fire Princess stayed in the car, but Arcanine tried not to.

"Growlie! Stay!" Kevin said.

"How did you ever think of the name Growlie, Daddy?" Joshua asked.

"I'll explain later," Kevin said.

"I thought you wouldn't come. I would've waited until later, but this paper is kinda important," Misty said once they got in, handing Kevin his papers.

"So, why did you do it?" Misty asked.

"Because Giovanni would've killed me if I hadn't. He caught Jessie and I together, and tried to kill us anyway, but he died of a heart-attack before he could pull the trigger."

"No, you idiot, I mean why did you chase us around?" she said.

"What do you mean?"

"I mean why did you chase us around, James!"

"Don't you ever call me that! My name is Kevin Kokasashu!"

"Where'd you ever think up the last name?" she asked.

"It's Jessie's you idiot. Shows how much you know about us!" Kevin said, and took Joshua's hand.

"Can you go out to the car? I'll be there in a minute," Kevin said. Joshua nodded and ran out the door.

"Great parenting, James," Misty said.

"You're the one who started it. And what would you know about being a parent? You're only 22!" Kevin replied back.

"Geez, James, there's probably 12 year olds out there with kids! And I know more about Joshua than you think," Misty said.

"Would you stop calling me that??? And what are you trying to say?"

"I'm trying to say I know who Joshua's birth parents are." Kevin looked at her.

"You do?? Then tell me!"

"Hmmm... I'd have to check with my boss on that one. Come back tomorrow." And with that, he left.

***

Joshua had a million questions when Kevin got in the car.

"What did she mean 'chase us around'? Who did you chase around? And why did she keep calling you James? Isn't your name Kevin? Why were you fighting? Don't you like her?"

"Joshua... You should ask your mother, not me." Joshua looked at him.

"But why?" he asked.

"Because I'm a bad bad Daddy."

***

"What are you talking about!?! You can't just leave!" Jessie screamed.

"Jessica, I have to. I'll be back someday, I promise."

"James Robert Montgomery!" Jessie screamed at the top of her lungs. Kevin was surprised. Not at the use of his old name, but more of the tone she'd said it in. She'd never heard her talk like that ever before.

"My name is Kevin Micheal Kokasashu," Kevin said quietly.

"What about Lily and Joshua? They need you, James, your children need you!" Jessie yelled. By now she had started crying.

"Jessica, you're making this even harder than it already is. I will be back in a week or two. You can tell the children I went on a business trip," Kevin said, although he felt like crying too.

"Now you want me to LIE to them? What's gotten into you?" she asked.

"I called Misty this morning, asking her about Joshua's birth parents. She said that she could tell me, but she wasn't going to. She's making it sound like it's someone really bad. I know it doesn't matter, but I can't help it. I have to know. I know we are his parents now, but I have to know who had him," Kevin said.

"But *why*???" Kevin shook his head.

"Because. If it is who I have a feeling it is, things could get bad by the time he's ten. Yes, I know he's only six, but still. I'll explain when I get back." And with that, Kevin left, heading towards Pallet Town.
