Vt. Lawmaker Wants to Lower Drinking Age

Changing Limit Could Cost State Federal Money

January 26th, 2005

Montpelier, Vt - If 18 year olds can vote and fight in Iraq, then they should be allowed to buy beer, according to a Vermont State Legislator.

Richard Marron said it's totally illogical to allow some adult rights for 18-year-olds, but not others.

He's trying to get support from his fellow Vermont Replicans to lower the drinking age in the state.

But federal law mandates the 21-year-old drinking age if a state is to recieve federal highway funds.

Vermont could loose nearly $10 million from Uncle Sam.

Some in the state's legislature want to know how Marron would make good on the shortfall if the drinking age is lowered.

My View on the subject

I believe the whole thing is completely stupid and what in the world is this idiot thinking. Doesn't he realize that they will be more fatalities if he pursues this matter. The drinking age is 21 and should stay that way if not higher. If beer can be bought by underage kids now, what makes him think that more underage kids wont get their hands on alcohol now. There will be more of them buying it if he lowers the drinking age in his state. It's immoral and crazy if he does make this into a law. Seems like to me in the article above, they only thing they worry about is the federal money. Money is not important. Shouldn't human life over ride money? How would he like it if he passes this law and some 18-year-old kid drinks and drives and takes the life of one of his loved ones? Would he rethink his decision then? Maybe he has never lost a loved one to a drunk driver but if he has, what is he thinking? If he never has, he never wants to. Losing somebody to a drunk driver will rip out your heart and crush it to remind you of the pain and sorrow of losing your loved one. That pain will never leave you and it gets worse with time. It will never dull or fade away. They say that time heals all wounds, well they lied. Never in a million years will time make it better when you lose somebody to a drunk driver. It's a very big perventable death if somebody would just grow brains and stay home and drink. Why drink and drive, that is a question I would love to be answered. Doesn't make you a bigger person, its makes you a foolish stupid person. To me, if you kill somebody while drinking and driving, that is murder plain and simple. They will never come back just because a driver thought they would act stupid and show off to friends or others by drinking and driving. I think Mr. Marron should know the pain and heartache a drunk driver will cause and that he shouldn't lower the drinking age in his home state. If he passes this law, he is basically handing over the keys to a drunk driver. I am not saying all people who drink alcohol goes out and drive, some do have the brains to stay home and drink and not put innocent people and their own lives in danger. I hope and pray that this law will never pass and Mr. Marron realizes what he was about to do and never thinks about lowering the age ever again. I hope and pray that no lawmaker, current and future ones, ever pass a law to lower the drinking age cause if they do, those innocent deaths are on their hands as well as the drunk driver. It's pure craziness. What is the world comming to now days?
