PROFILE: THE FAMILY OF SAMUEL E. METCALF AND FANNIE PHILLIPS |
|||||
The first time Sam Metcalf appears on records, he was enlisting to serve in the Indian War. This was 1836 in Jacksonville, Benton (now Calhoun) Co, AL. According to pension papers, he served in Capt William Arnold's Company, commanded by John Turner. He obviously was discharged and remained in Benton County. He appears next on record 12 Sept 1839 when he married Fannie Phillips, daughter of Mark Phillips and Nancy Sheffield in Benton County. The Phillips family also lived in Benton Co at that time. He was enumerated as a head of household for the 1840 US Census in Benton Co. The household consisted of one male and one female, both aged 20-30. By 1850, the census enumerator found the Metcalf family living in St Clair Co, AL. The Phillips family was living in the same area. At some time in the 1850's, Sam & Fannie had moved back to Benton/Calhoun Co. They lived in the Peaks Hill area in the western part of the county. Sam owned a good sized farm there and records indicate that he also served as a Benton County constable. Sam Metcalf was killed at his farm in Peaks Hill 30 Nov 1859 as he and his half-brother, Hiram Moore were sawing wood. The newspaper account of his death from THE JACKSONVILLE REPUBLICAN, 8 Dec 1859, reads: "HOMICIDE We learn that on Wednesday the 30th ul, Samuel Metcalf, living in the western part of this county was shot by Vandy Sturkie, with a pistol, and died in about 15 minutes. It appears that Sturkie and a Mr. Moore (Hiram Moore) half-brother of Metcalf, had wrestled sometime before, and Moore had thrown Sturkie, at which he was probably enraged. Moore and Metcalf were sawing with a cross-cut saw when the shooting took place. Sturkie merely remarking "look out" and fired; the wad striking Moore and the ball Metcalf below the ear ranging downwards into his lungs. Sturkie was taken or went before a magistrate and was released on the ground that he did not kill the man he shot at. He has since left." Obviously, the legal system worked a bit differently in 1859. Samuel was buried at Old Harmony Bapt Cemetery in what is now Rainbow City, Etowah Co, AL. Samuel and Fannie were some of the original members of the church, along with many of Fannie's Phillips relatives. The 1860 US Census recorded Fannie with her children living, still, in Peaks Hill, Calhoun Co, AL, but by 1870, the family was listed as living in the Kansas (Green Valley/Southside) area of Etowah Co, AL. There's a chance that the family didn't actually move as Peaks Hill and Kansas were geographically very close. When the boundaries for Etowah Co were established in 1868, it may have included part of the Peaks Hill area. On 5 Sept 1892, Fannie filed for Sam's pension, based on his military service. In that application, she recorded that Sam had been born in 1818 in Hamilton Co, TN. This is the only real "clue" to his origins, although no record has been found that would give any information on his parentage. The 1850 census recorded his age as 32 and birth place as Tennessee. Fannie remained in that same area through the 1880 census and in 1900, she was also listed in that area, living in the household of her grandson, William Marcus Moore. I have not found a 1910 listing for Fannie, but that is recorded as the year of her death on her tombstone. She was also buried at Old Harmony Bapt Cemetery in Rainbow City, Etowah Co, AL. Children of Samuel E. Metcalf and Fannie Phillips: 1) Frances Metcalf, b. abt 1840, AL. She is listed only on the 1850 census with her family at age 10. 2) Eliza Metcalf, b. abt 1842, AL. She is listed on the 1850 and 1860 censuses with her family. 3) James Mattison Metcalf, Sr, b. 15 Jan 1844, AL, d. 4 Jun 1927, Etowah Co, AL. He md Margaret Moore, daughter of David Moore & Louisa E. Chandler abt 1869. Margaret was born 25 Dec 1853 in Cherokee Co, AL and died 16 Jan 1916 in Etowah Co, AL. James and Margaret are buried at Old Harmony Bapt Cemetery in Rainbow City, Etowah Co, AL. 4) Nancy Jane Metcalf, b. Feb 1846, AL. Md Frank M. Ables 11 Aug 1865 in Calhoun Co, AL. Frank was born Aug 1836 in AL. The latest record I have for Nancy and Frank is the 1900 census when they were living in the Keysburg area of Etowah Co, AL. 5) Lydia Emily Metcalf, b. May 1848, AL, d. 9 Mar 1917, Etowah Co, AL. Md Sidney Marion Moore 19 Jan 1871 in Etowah Co, AL. Sidney, son of David Moore & Louisa E. Chandler, was born 9 Apr 1850, Cherokee Co, AL and died 9 Jul 1918, Etowah Co, AL. Emily and Sidney are buried at Pilgrams Rest Bapt Cemetery in Southside, Etowah Co, AL. 6) Charles M. Metcalf, 1850 in St Clair Co, AL. Information I have been provided says that he married Mattie McKee, who died before 1880, and that Charles lived in OK as late as 1930, but I have been unable to confirm this. I found a marriage record for Charles M. Metcalf & Lucinda C. Reaves 13 Aug 1868, Calhoun Co, AL and yet another marriage record for a C.M. Metcalf & M.A. Murphree, license issured 25 Dec 1877 and returned 27 Dec 1877, Calhoun Co, AL. I'd appreciate any information that anyone could give me on Charles. 7) Charlsie Ann Metcalf, b. abt 1853, AL. There is no evidence that she ever married, although she is listed as a widow on the 1880 census and she has 3 children -all named Metcalf. I have no record of her after 1880, though. 8) William C. Metcalf, b. Apr 1857, AL, d. 1947, Washita Co, OK. William md Margaret Wessie Cunningham 15 Dec 1886 in Etowah Co, AL. Margaret, daughter of James Cunningham and Frances Melinda Roberts, was born 18 Nov 1871 in Etowah Co, AL and died 1929 in Washita Co, OK. William and Margaret are buried at Lone Star Cemetery, Rocky, Washita Co, OK. |
