There are 2 children shown on the 1870 Milton Co census with the family of Henry and Elizabeth that are probably the children of Albert and Hannah. I have found it difficult to find concrete documentation on Henry and Elizabeth Smith. So far, I have them documented for 40 years in census records, but I have little to go along with it. The ages of Henry & Elizabeth tend to flucuate wildly in some of these records so I am unsure when they were born. With the surname of SMITH, I am sort of surprised I was able to get as far as I did. I was very fortunate they didn't move around a great deal! In 1850, the family of Henry & Elizabeth Smith was enumerated as residents of Forsyth Co, GA. Their listing shows the following information about the family: Henry Smith, age 29, blacksmith, b. GA Elizabeth, age 34, b. NC Albert, age 13, b. GA Henry, age 12, b. GA Richard, age 10, b. GA Eliza, age 8, b. GA George, age 5, b. GA William, age 4, b. GA If the ages of the children are close to correct, Henry & Elizabeth would have been married around 1836-1837. In 1860, the Smith family was enumerated in Milton Co, GA, which was formed in 1857 from parts of Cherokee, Cobb, and Forsyth Counties. I don't believe they actually moved into Milton County. I believe they were absorbed into the newly formed county as they kept a lot of the same close neighbors. Milton County is now a "historic" county of Georgia because in 1932, it became a part of Fulton County. The area where the Smith's lived was in the Alpharetta area outside Atlanta. By 1860, the two older sons, Henry & Albert, had married and they were also enumerated in Milton County, living near their family. The 1860 census listing reveals the following about them: page 53 Henry Smith, age 46, blacksmith, $640 in real estate, $300 in personal estate, b. NC Elizabeth Smith, age 45, b. GA Richard Smith, age 20, b. GA Eliza Smith, age 18, b. GA George Smith, age 15, b. GA W.A. Smith, age 14, b. GA (male) Isaiah Smith, age 6, b. GA M.E. Smith, age 4, b. GA (female) page 54 Albert Smith, age 22, farmer, $75 in personal estate, b. GA Hannah Smith, age 18, b. GA page 55 Henry Smith, Jr, age 21, farmer, $75 in personal estate, b. GA S.A. Smith (female), age 18, b. GA I believe the census enumerater transposed the birth places of Henry & Elizabeth in this case. This is the only personal census record that indicates a birth place other than GA and NC. The Civil War was particularly hard on the Smith family. On 31 Aug 1864, the four oldest sons, Albert age 23), Henry (age 22), Richard (age 21), and George (age 17), all enlisted in the Confederate States Army in Company E, 22nd GA Infantry. The unit, known as the Warsaw Rebels, was formed from soldiers from Milton and Forsyth Counties. Within 2 months, Henry & Elizabeth lost 3 of their 4 sons and the fourth was permanently disabled, according to service records. Albert died of typhoid fever at General Hospital #2 in Lynchburg, VA on 22 Jun 1862. Henry, according to his service record, died 27 Jul 1862 in Falling Creek, VA. The record does not state whether he died of illness or injury. The record gives the following physical description of the person referred to "H.C. Smith" : blue eyes, light hair, fair complexion, 5'10'' tall. The record also shows that his wife, Sarah, made claim for and recieved his final pay and allowances of $81.90. George was wounded 25 Jun 1862 in an engagement and he died 14 Jul 1862 in Richmond, VA. Because he was unmarried, his father, Henry Smith, made claim for and recieved George's final pay and allowances of $77.13. Richard was wounded 31 May 1862 at Seven Pines, VA. His right heel was permanently destroyed during his participation in the Battle of Gettysburg 2 Jul 1863. He was home in MIlton Co on medical furlough at the close of the war. It's impossible not to wonder how Henry & Elizabeth were effected by these losses. Of course, most of their neighbors were also directly effected by the Civil War. Although I have no yet begun to research the aspect, I am very curious about what kind of activity took place in the Milton County area during the Civil War. Considering the proximity to Atlanta, they probably witnessed the burning of Atlanta by Sherman's forces! Henry & Elizabeth were enumerated, as well as most of their remaining children, in MIlton County for the 1870 census. The census record reveals the following information: **No Township Listed, Alpharetta Post Office** Henry Smith, age 42, farmer, $750 in real estate, $700 in personal estate, b. GA Elizabeth Smith, age 50, keeping house, b. NC Isiah Smith, age 16, farm laborer, b. GA, attended school within the year Nancy E. Smith, age 13, at home, b. GA, cannot read or write Henry Smith, age 10, at home, b. GA, cannot read or write Albert R. Smith, age 9, at home, b. GA Richard Smith, age 30, farmer, $250 in real estate, $250 in personal estate, b. AL Sarah E. Smith, age 28, keeping house, b. AL Robert H. Smith, age 8, b. GA, attended school within the year William Smith, age 22, farmer, $500 in real estate, $200 in personal estate, b. GA Sarah F. Smith, age 26, keeping house, b. GA George C. Smith, age 4, b. GA Robert E. Smith, age 1, b. GA Robert H. Pannell, age 20, single, day laborer, b. GA **Bells, Cherokee County-Cherokee Mills Post Office** James Vaughn, age 40, farm laborer, b. GA, cannot read or write Eliza Jo Vaughn, age 28, keeping house, b. GA John Vaughn, age 15, farm laborer, b. GA I believe that Albert and Henry, listed in the household of Henry & Elizabeth, are grandchildren and possibly the children of their son, Albert. There mother must have died also, leaving them with family. The final census record for Henry & Elizabeth Smith was the 1880 census when they were, again, enumerated as residents of Milton County. Their children were also still living in the area. The enumeration of Milton County reveals the following information: **Newtown** Henry Smith, age 62, farmer, b. GA, father b. SC, mother b. KY Elizabeth Smith, age 66, wife, keeping house, b. NC, both parents b. VA (Just a few homes away) Isaiah Smith, age 31, farmer, b. GA, father b. SC, mother b. NC Martha A. Smith, age 18, stepson, farmer, attended school with the year, cannot read or write, b. GA, both parents b. GA (Next door to the family of Richard Smith) Henry Smith, age 20, (cannot read relationship), laborer, b. GA, both parents b. GA Henry is listed in the household of Richard Adams (A couple of houses away from Richard) James Vaughn, age 55, farmer, cannot read or write, b. GA, father b. GA, mother b. SC Eliza J. Vaughn, age 37, wife, keeping house, cannot read or write, b. GA, father b. NC, mother b. VA Charles N. Vaughn, age 28, farmer, b. GA, both parents b. GA Nancy E. Vaughn, age 23, wife, keeping house, b. GA, both parents b. GA Eliza J. Vaughn, age 2, daughter, b. GA Albert F. Vaughn, age 5 months (no specific month listed), b. GA On the 1880 census, there are 5 different opportunities to learn the birth places of Henry and Elizabeth, but as you see from the above information, there are some different "opinions!" From these records I have developed the following "opinions" about Henry and Elizabeth--but I would be more than willing to accept different points of view from other sources. I think that Henry Smith was born about 1818 in GA, and that his father came from SC and mother from KY. I think that Elizabeth was born about 1814 in NC and that her parents were from VA. As for Elizabeth's maiden name, I think there's a possibility that she may be a sister--or in some other way related--to Harrison Bowen. He was born about 1815 in NC....the right age and place of birth to have been a brother to her. The Harrison Bowen family, in census records, is a close neighbor in 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880. I have found an 1834 marriage record in Richmond Co, GA for a Henry Smith to an Elizabeth Borem. I wonder if that name isn't really Bowen, but I haven't seen the actual record yet--just a transcription. When Isaiah Smith died in 1917 in Etowah Co, AL, his parents were listed as HENRY O. SMITH, born in GA, and ELIZABETH SMITH, born in GA. That is the only time I have seen a middle intial listed for Henry. Other than that death certificate, the 4 census records are --so far-- the only documents I have concerning Henry & Elizabeth. Elizabeth died 4 Feb 1892 in Milton Co, GA. Henry died two months later 18 Apr 1892 in Milton Co. Both are buried at Mount Pisgah United Methodist Cemetery in Alpharetta, (then Milton) Fulton Co, GA. Neither tombstone lists a date of birth, but the stones indicate that Henry was age 75 and Elizabeth was age 85, which brings in a whole new set of dates. although I doubt that Elizabeth was 10 years older than Henry. |
