Halloween is the one holiday that is shrouded in a heavy and heated debate over wether we should celebrate it or not. However, the 'facts' that Christian fundamentalists spew to scare people away from the holiday are all silly urban legends. I have humbly tried to dispell some of their beliefs below, but much more detailed cases on both sides can be found on the following websites:

Halloween Errors and Lies (Pro Halloween)
Halloween, It's Origins and Customs (Against Halloween)

The Myth: Halloween is the night when satanic power is glorified and devil worshippers praise the god of the dead.
The Truth: Well, first of all, the devil worshippers they are speaking of are modern day Druids, Witches and NeoPagans who don't believe in the devil at all. As for Samhain, the 'lord of the dead', he simply doesn't exist. Samhain means 'Hallow-tide' or 'sacred-time'. The Celtic celebration was to honor summer's end and some scholars believe it was also their New Year.

The Myth: Devil worshippers commit human and animal sacrifices to honor Satan.
The Truth: None of the local, state or federal law enforcement agencies (including the FBI) have ever found one example of a 'satanic cult human sacrifice'. What they have found are killings that have been committed in what a psychiatrist would call a ritualistic manner. Witches have a code that states, 'An it harm none, do what ye will'. So anyone who claimed to be a witch or that they were doing it in Satan's name could not be affiliated with any such religion and are acting on their own twisted beliefs.

The Myth: Satanic cults tamper with Halloween treats, putting razor blades or pins in them or poison them to harm children.
The Truth: All documented cases of Halloween candy that had been tampered with turned out to be either hoaxes, a child or adult playing a prank or a murder plot by someone to kill a relative. No case has had anything to do with so called devil worshipping cults.

The Myth: Normally well behaved children are driven to destructive behavior by unseen forces.
The Truth: Children and adults both look for any excuse to get wild and have some harmless (and sometimes not so harmless) fun and unfortunately Halloween has had pranks associated with it for several hundred years. There aren't dark forces driving kids to toilet paper someone's house or toss eggs. It's kids (and adult kids) being kids. Get a grip.

So, why celebrate this holiday that is associated with so much scary imagery such as vampires, ghouls, monsters, goblins, demons and ghosts? Because its all in good fun and originally (and still is to some cultures) was a day that we celebrated our loved ones who had passed on. Whats so wrong with that? Halloween isn't anything evil. These days in America it is mostly about dressing up, kids collecting candy and general merry mayhem. The only people who are making it evil are the ones who are spreading lies just to scare people.

Footnote: Anyone who sends any hate mail my way will simply be ignored. I have done my research, and besides that I am entitled to my beliefs just as you are. I will not respond to any negative e-mail, those will just be deleted.
