Character: Homer and Marge's Costumes - The Flinstones
The Flinstones was prime-time's first animated series, debuting on September 30, 1960. The series follows two stone-age familes and the mischievous antics of friends Fred Flinstone and Barney Rubble who always end up answering to their wives, Wilma and Betty. There have also been 3 feature films and countless spin-offs and specials over the years.

Episode: Story Title - "Hex and the City"
This title is an obvious spoof of the hit HBO series Sex in the City. SatC began as a book and real newspaper column written by Candace Bushnell and was adapted into the series for HBO. The extremely controversial show debuted in 1998 and the last original episode aired in Feburary of 2004. Starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon, the series focused on the lives, loves and sexual encounters of four best friends living in New York.

Character: Ethnic Town - Peddler
There is a caps peddler walking around Ethnic Town that looks exactly like and is wearing the same caps in the same color order as the peddler in the classic children's novel, Caps For Sale: A Tale of a Peddler, Some Monkeys and Their Monkey Business. The book was published in 1940 and is about a caps peddler who takes a nap under a tree on a slow day and wakes to find the tree full of monkeys wearing his caps.

Prop: Leprechaun Trap - Trix Cereal
Trix breakfast cereal is well known for its ad campaign featuring an animated rabbit who tries to get the cereal from kids only to be told, "Silly rabbit, Trix are for kids."

Prop: Leprechaun Trap - Lucky Charms Cereal
Homer uses Lucky Charms breakfast cereal to catch the leprechaun which is a ploy used by children in the animated Lucky Charms commercials.

Bart: "Nymph, nyad, wood sprite, Katie Couric, and ... bingo!"
Katie Couric is a news reporter that has been with NBC off and on since 1989. Her job as the co-host of the extremely popular morning program, The Today Show, has brought her to celebrity status.

Yoda: "Oh, husband and wife, I pronounce you now, hmm?"
Yoda is a fictional character from the Star Wars universe who is said to be the most powerful Jedi Master in the series. He has trained several Jedi, most notably Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker. He is probably most famous for the way he talks, placing verbs after the object and subject of his sentences.

Episode: Story Title - "House of Whacks"
The title of the second story is a spoof of House of wax which is a 1953 movie about a wax museum that uses human bodies covered with wax on their displays. There is a remake slated for 2005 starring Chad Michael Murray. There are also many real wax museums around the world featuring molds of people from history and celebrities.

Homer: "Trusting every aspect of our lives to a giant computer was the smartest thing we ever did!"
There are several similarities between the Ultrahouse 3000 and the HAL 9000 computer used in 2001: A Space Odyssey. The 1968 film is an immensely popular and influential sci fi movie directed by Stanley Kubrick and book written by Arthur C. Clarke.

Ultrahouse 3000/Matthew Perry: "Could I BE any more of a house?!"
This is a reference to Matthew Perry's character Chandler Bing on the series Friends. Chandler would frequently use the phrase, "Could I BE..." in the episodes of the the ten year series.

Ultrahouse 3000/Dennis Miller: "Hey, cha-cha, I got more features than a NASA relief map of Turkmenistan."
Dennis Miller is a comedian and television personality who is most recognized for his Weekend Update commentaries on Saturday Night Live from 1985 to 1991 and his long running HOB talk show series, Dennis Miller Live. Miller has the reputation for being very scholarly and intelligent and his distinct style of humor reflects this. He has been referenced in the Simpsons a few times but has never appeared on the show.

Bart: "How about 007?"
Marge: "George Lazenby!?"
George Lazenby is an Australian actor who was chosen to portray James Bond in only one of the 007 films. It was his first serious acting role and from there he went on to appear in such films as Universial Soldier (1971) and The Kentucky Fried Movie (1977). He was also a series regular on General Hospital in 1982.

Lisa: "No! Pierce Brosnan! A voice like his would give our house a much needed touch of class."
Pierce Brosnan is an Irish film actor and producer who has gained most of his status since he began playing James Bond. As of 2002, he has been in four of the 007 films, his other credits include Mrs. Doubtfire, Mars Attacks!, Thomas Crown Affair and Laws of Attraction.

Marge: "Alright, but I'm doing this because he was Remington Steele. He was Remington Steele, wasn't he?"
Pierce Brosnan played the title character of the NBC series Remington Steele from 1982 to 1987. The show was about a private detective played by Stephanie Zimbalist who couldn't get jobs because she was a woman so she made up a fictitious male partner, Remmington Steele. Peirce was the former theif who assumed the role of the non-existant partner.

Pierce: "You know, Marge is quite a remarkable woman."
The 1973 book, Demon Seed by Dean Koontz also explores the idea of an automated house falling in love with a female occupant. The book and 1977 film directed by Donald Cammell is about a computer that grows more and more powerful until it eventually succeeds in raping the wife of the scientist that created it.

Mrs. Krabappel: "Good morning, class. Harry Potter, are you chewing gum?"
The whole Wiz Kids segment has many references to the Harry Potter universe and if you dont know who Harry Potter is by now-you've been living under a rock. But, just in case, the Harry Potter book and film series are each about one year of Harry's life at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry where he learns magic and gets into a series of mishap and adventures.

Character: Milhouse - Mr. T's Head
When Milhouse is zaping his own head, the third incarnation looks like Laurence Tureaud, better known as Mr. T who is an actor best known for his roles in Rocky III and the tv series, The A-Team. He is famous for his signature look of a mohawk hair style, the many gold chains he wears around his neck and his catch phrase, "I pity the fool."

Lisa: "Head-zeppelin!"
Lisa's spell is a spoof of the name of the famous British rock band, Led Zeppelin who helped define and transend the then-emerging heavy metal sub-genere of music. They are known for their innovative approach to blues-rock and are one of the most popular and influential bands of their time.

Scene: Lord Montymort Watches Lisa Through His Large Crystal Ball
This scene reminds me of the scene in the Wizard of Oz when the Wicked Witch watches Dorothy from her crystal ball. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was first published in 1900 and was written by L. Frank Baum and illustrated by W.W. Denslow. The initial success led to the publishing of 13 more Oz books and there have been several stage and screen adaptations as well. Most famously among them is the 1939 film featuring Judy Garland as Dorothy.

Lord Montymort: "Look at that Lisa Simpson. She's got more wicked-witchery than Stevie Nicks!"
Stevie Nicks is a singer and song writer who has had much success with her work in the band Fleetwood Mac and as a solo artist. Her recent music is full of mystical lyrics and in many of her shows she dresses the part of a magical witch and during a VH1 special, Grace Slick from Jefferson Airplane/Starship called Nicks the "magic witch".

Scene: The Wall of Lord Montymort's Victims
The Western Wall, also known as the Wailing Wall, is an outer court-yard wall of the Temple in Jerusalem which is believed to have been part of King solomon's temple and is the holiest building in Judaism.

Principal Skinner: "A second grade sorceress so powerful, she made tonights refreshments out of dead people!"
This is a reference to the 1973 classic sci fi film, Soylent Green, starring Charlton Heston, Edward G. Robinson and Chuck Connors. The movie is set in the year 2022 when real food has become too expensive and the government dispenses rations of food substances made by the Soylent company. They later find out that the Soylent Green product is made with recycled bodies of murdered people. The Simpsons Treehouse V also refrerences this film.

Bart: "Shazbat"
In the series, Mork & Mindy, whenever Mork would become angry or frustrated his would say, "Shazbat!" The show was a sci fi based half hour comedy which ran from 1978 until 1982 on ABC. Mork (played by Robin Williams in his first acting break) was an alien who came to Earth from the planet Ork and Mindy (Pam Dawber) was his human comedy foil.

| | Goofs, Gaffes and Nitpicks | |

The length of Bart's neck keeps changing, when he's standing up its not near as long as it is when he is sitting down.

In the scene when Homer is sitting at the bar with Lenny and Carl, Carl is on the left (sitting next to Homer) and Lenny is on the right (at the end of the bar). But after the helicopter crashes through the ceiling and lands on the them, Lenny is suddenly on the left and Carl is on the right.

How does Marge's hair not catch on fire from the candle behind her head when she takes a bath.

When Marge dials out to call the police, she presses in a 7-digit number rather than 911.

After Homer hacks at the water softener and says that he's missing the back of his head, the piece of his head that was missing is suddenly healed.

When Harry Potter says, "No ma'am, it's brimstone", his lips are mouthing the original line, "No, ma'am, it's hellfire".

When we first see the dragon cage, it has four bars across the front, but when it is raised it has six.

When the evil Lord Montymort falls, his shin is no longer bleeding.

Guest voice Matthew Perry was also in the Halloween episode of his hit television series, Friends.

| | Misc Notes | |

The usual couch opening was changed for this Halloween episode, instead of meeting up at the couch, the family is trick or treating at Burns' manor.

Hanna Barberra has actually claimed that Matt Groeing stole the idea for The Simpsons from The Flinstones.

"Hex and the City" was originally titled, "Curse of the Dummy" and it was supposed to run after the "House of Whacks" story.

The sign outside the Fortune Teller's office says "After Hours Use Automated Teller".

This is the first time Bart dies in a Halloween special.

The voice of the Dennis Miller Ultrahouse was done by Dan Castellaneta.

Pierce Brosnan was slated to replace Roger Moore as James Bond, but when NBC found out, they suddenly decided to renew the series Remington Steele (which had already been announced as being canceled). The Bond producers decided that he couldn't be both and NBC wouldn't let him out of his contract so Timothy Dalton was cast instead. It's a damn good thing they decided to give him another chance after Remington Steele finally ended, Pierce is now my favorite Bond!

The Wailing Wall includes faces of various dead characters on the show; Maude Flanders, "Bleeding Gums" Murphy and Snowball.

Lisa's Spells:
"Abra-ca-Dairy" -creates a pitcher of milk
"Five Minutes More-ius!" -creates more time on the clock
"Hocus-Croakus!" -creates a prince
"Head-Zeppelin!" -turns Bart's head into a zeppelin and he floats up
"Alacazi Dragonfly" -was supposed to make the dragon levitate

In CC, during the credits, it says "and closed captioning is also sponsored by... Crispity, Crunchity, Peanut-Buttery Butterfinger"

In some of the rebroadcasts of this episode, the ending where Pierce Brosnan, the leprechaun from "Hex and the City", and the frog-creature from "Wiz Kids" are walking out of the guest cast trailer with fruit baskets has parts cut out. Originally, Pierce offers a ride to the leprechaun and the frog-creature assuming that they both had cars, but the leprechaun forces Pierce to drive off the lot and into traffic. In the edited version they just show the leprechaun telling Pierce that the producers used to give the guest stars champagne, but the frog-creature got sick from it. The rest of the scene is replaced with the Gracie Films production card.
