The Legend: A psychic makes an appearance on a popular television talk show and states that an escaped mental patient will commit and mass murder on Halloween night at a certain college campus.

Fact or Fiction?: Fiction. The first known appearance of this tale is somewhere in the Midwest in 1968 and it has seen many comebacks since then, most notably in 1979, 1983, 1986, 1991 with a huge return in 1998.

There are so many variations to the story it would take ages to list them all. Plot points such as the killer, the number of victims, the murder weapon, the college and the building where the killings take place all change depending upon where the story is being told or who is telling it.

The 1998 versions most commonly contained plot twists like that the psychic prediction was either on Montel Williams or Oprah and it was an episode that was filmed but never aired. The killer was dressed as Little Bo Peep or wearing the Ghostface costume from the scream movies. The school building or dormitory that the killer was to attack was shaped like either an 8, U or H and was near a cemetery, rail road track or some kind of water source.

And although this is a legend that had been going around for decades, many students in 1998 were warned not to go anywhere alone and to watch out for 'suspicious' people. And even though campus newspapers were publishing the fact that the story was just a harmless urban legend, kids were still spooked. "I’m scared," a freshman Michigan State U who lived at Holden Hall, an H-shaped dorm that is only a few hundred yards from the Grand Trunk Western Railroad tracks. "I’m going to the fraternity house for the weekend. I don’t care if it is true or not. I’m not waiting around to find out."
