Ottawa Winterlude 2000

The following is a photo virtual tour of some of the ice sculptures designed and created at the Ottawa Winterlude 2000. The pictures were taken by my friend, Dan Marcotte.

Ice Sculpture by European Union - This is the EU symbol representing its 15 member nations.

Ice Sculpture by European Union - This detailed sculpture represents several EU countries. Notice the Concord replica at the top of the sculpture. On the right is the pyramid which is located at the entrance to the Louvre in France. The Santa Claus and reindeer represent Finland the Millenium Dome is located in London.

Ice Sculpture by European Union - Again this detailed sculpture represents several EU countries. Notice on the right, the huge wooden shoe (too big and cold for my feet) as a symbol of Holland. Spain is represented by Don Quixote while the Celtic Cross on the far left is a well known Irish symbol. On top is a hydrofoil ship which is but one particular form of water transportation in Europe.

Ice Sculpture by European Union - This European Union ice sculpture has a Roman aquaduct on the right reminding us of Italy. The large rocket and launch structure represents the European Space Agency and its successes. The Coat of Arms of Luxemburg is on the far left. While Germany is pictured in the centre.

Ice Sculpture by European Union - Again this detailed sculpture represents several EU countries. On top, there is a replica of the high speed French train, Tres Grande Vitesse representing the importance of train transportation throughout Europe. On the right is a typical representation of Greek architecture.

How could we forget the Casino in Hull? Well just in case you did forget, here's a reminder that you can invest your money across the river from Ottawa in Hull, Quebec.

The ever popular fire-breathing dragon.

The days of cowboys and Indians have long come and gone. This sculpture depicts a proud member of Canada's aboriginal people mounted on a horse in front of a Totem Pole.

This sculpture represents some of Canada's natural beauty. It is entitled Indian Summer. The flock of Canada geese is heading down the southern coast U.S. coast to get away from the harsh Canadian winter. Many Canadians have learned from these geese and now follow suit.

Chivalry and the spirit of Valentine are well and alive in Ottawa as shown here in this obvious Valentine sculpture.

Sydney and Australia were well represented at this year's Winterlude ice sculptures. This sculpture reminds us that this year's summer Olympics will be held in Australia.

This sculpture is dedicated to the Year 2000 and the new millenium. Notice the gorgeous bear who seems to fit in so well right downtown Ottawa.

I am not really sure what this sculpture represents. But as this is Ottawa, could it be a web of intrigue woven not by a spin but by our politicians?

I watched the artist painstakingly work on this sculpture the night before the judging. You can see at the elbow where he "glued" the upper and lower arm together. It was very very cold outside, he reached with his bare hand into a bucket of warm water and smeared it on the two pieces and then held it there. He did the same when he accidentally cut off one of the statue's fingers. Brrrrrrrr
