Frank and Anna owned the Sherman Hotel in Waconia and Frank would run the saloon and Anna would take care of the hotel, laundry and meals. Wagon trains would pass through Waconia and stop at the hotel. Frank and Anna's sons would feed and water the horses. When Frank died Anna continued to run the hotel with the help of her sons (one being my grandfather Arnold) and daughters. Her daughter-in-law Antonia (Fishman) who came to the US at the age of 13 after her parents deaths was hired to help with the cooking and laundry chores also. ---As told to me by Martha Zeman Lindner

From some conversations with mother:
Arnold owned a model T. They never owned a washing machine all laundry was done by hand. The had a wood stove for cooking and an "icebox" for refrigeration, the ice was delivered. The home which was rented, and was heated with an oil burner. One time, there was a tornado and great grandpa Borka hid behind the bed, while he was supposed to be baby sitting. Grandpa Arnold was an interior decorator/painter and Grandma Lizzie stayed home. Mom was the first one to own a radio, but grandma and grandpa used to listen to it all the time; the favorite programs at the time were "Cecil and Sally" and "Ma Perkins". They never owned a record player, but Lizzie's sister Theresa had a boyfriend who'd bring over his crank-type one. Grandpa played the violin, his violin was given to my brother Robert Betlach. The kids rarely went to the movies, because they didn't have much money; even though admission was only 10 cents. Mom liked Joan Crawford movies. During WWI the family got commodities. Mom owned a white poodle when she was about 10, she got him from the landlord, Mr. Wally Johnson. The favorite games around the house were "Little Red Riding Hood" and some game where they would spin 10 and take 10 steps, Checkers and the parish priest, Father Stelmus would come to the house and play checkers with Sylvester. Mom's favorite toy was her doll (which I still own) and a stroller. The kids didn't have many toys and for Christmas they each got a bag of candy. They didn't celebrate December 24/5 with gifts, but Celebrated Jan 6th, St. Nicholas Day. Grandma Anna (Zbytovsky) Zeman would have the kids over to her house.
They attended St. Joseph's Catholic Church and if for some reason grandma wasn't home on a Sunday, grandpa would see to it they always got to mass. Grandpa was not of the Catholic faith, he belonged to the Moravian Church. The kids could go on dates with chaperones. Birthday's were not made into some big celebration, probably for lack of money; there were no gifts exchanged. Grandma sewed all the clothes or remade hand-me-downs. The didn't live on a farm but grandma always raised a garden.
During the war Arnold worked in a shipyard in Pendelton, Oregon. There is one letter from Arnold to Lizzie from Oregon, where he writes of breaking his arm or shoulder.
A son is listed as Jake, could be a nickname.

According to a note from Jan, Martha said there were brothers of Joseph Zeman (b: ca 1818) who broke away from the family.
Mother told me that when she was a child, Martha used to play with her and the other children, they would have "picnics", upstairs in the house. They would use an old mattress for a "raft" and they would set out on make believe adventures
