At the AOP sorority house, Trisha and a group of girls - Amber Dawson, Jeannie Lorentz and Shelley Sullivan decided to go to a movie out at the Georgia Square Mall. Trisha wore knee-length white shorts, a red knit top and brown closed-toed, low-heeled mules.
Before getting to the mall, they stopped by Wendy’s to grab a quick lunch. They discussed their classes, sorority activities and guys - typical college girl stuff. Shelley drove and Jeannie rode shotgun. Amber and Trisha got in the back crawling behind the front seat of the BMW 2-door sedan. While getting into the back seat of the car, Trisha had one shoe knocked off on the door jam. It hit the asphalt in a strange angle and rolled back under the car. Embarrassed, she asked Jeannie to reach under the car to retrieve it for her. “The seat belt must have caught my shoe, huh?”
They got to the movie and had to stand in line for several minutes. The girls talked with anticipation about the movie. Trisha kept dipping her foot in and out of her shoe; at times turning it over on its side and flipping it back into place.
Trisha led the way and the four girls went about half way down the aisle of the theater and turned right into a row of seats. It was a pretty crowded theater, it being opening weekend for this thriller. Trisha sat with her left leg crossed over her right dangling - sometimes slight and at tense moments with more force. At a particularly tense moment, her dangling shoe slid off and landed completely under the seat in front of her and to the right. She was not immediately concerned, thinking it had simply fallen down near her foot and not slid forward under the row of seats.
A few minutes later, the person sitting in the seat, under which her mule had slid, under returned from the restroom. While trying to carefully get back to his seat, without bumping too much into the other patrons in the row, he accidentally kicked the shoe farther up a couple of more rows.
Just a few more minutes later, a child sitting on the row where the shoe landed after being kicked, returned with a box of popcorn and a soda and while getting to his seat, kicked Trisha’s left mule down to end of row, landing under a long curtain hanging against the wall for decoration.
Later on during the movie, Trisha switched which leg was crossed over the other and felt around with her foot for the stray shoe, she could not find it. This went on for 15 minutes until the movie was over.
Amber asked her, “Why are you so squirmy today?”
Trisha replied not wanting to give away her secret yet, “Oh, nothing, just reacting to the suspense in the movie.” When the movie was over, Trisha sat in shame, showing no hurry to get up and leave.
Shelley asked her, “What are you waiting for, the credits are over and the lights are back on?”
Trisha replied quietly, “I can't find my shoe."
Jeannie noted, “You’re having trouble keeping those shoes on today aren’t you? That’s why I wear lace up shoes unless I’m required to do otherwise for a formal occasion, even then, I prefer strappy sandals or pumps.”
All 4 girls look under the theater seats in vicinity of where they sat with no success. They looked down each row and under each seat 5 rows in front and behind them, however they did not think to look under the curtain where the mule lay.
Amber suggested, “Why don’t you go to office to report it to Lost and Found?”
Trisha agreed and while she did this, the other 3 girls waited in the lobby. After leaving the theater her name and number, she was now faced with going home wearing one shoe. Her embarrassment heightened as they ran into some guys in the parking lot they knew. Trisha stood toward the back of the foursome and rubbed her bare foot behind the leg still having a shoe in attempt to hide her predicament. None of the guys noticed until they glanced one last time at the girls passed them on the way to the car, checking them out as all guys do.
One guy noted, “That one with the red top and white shorts is only wearing one shoe.”A second one shrugs it off, “She probably got a blister or something, happens all the time. She’s probably carrying her other shoe in her purse of something.”
The first guy agrees, “Yeah, you’re right, how could you lose a shoe watching a movie, anyway?”
The four girls return to Sorority house, by now, Trisha was carrying her one shoe in her hand as they proceeded into the house and walked past the lobby area where a congregation was always standing around chatting.
One of the girls standing there asks them what they did that afternoon. Shelley replied, “We went to see that new movie that just opened yesterday, oh and Trisha lost a shoe and we had to try to look for it with no success.”
Trisha, being embarrassed, left the group and ran up stairs to her room and slung the single mule under the bed. Three days later, amazingly, the theater called with the good news they found her shoe. She left after class that afternoon to return to claim it.
