The Knight at Dawn and Mummies in the Morning Exeter, RI |
Difficulty - Easy. 2+ mile loop. There are a series of trails around this beautiful place. We always hike the side with the pond and where we placed the letterboxes. It is much more interesting than the trails on the other side of the road. From 102 southbound (from I95) turn left onto Widow Sweets Road. It is opposite Anderson Furniture and just before the Exeter town hall. Turn right on Pardon Joslin when the road comes to a "T" and follow the sign. PJ is a narrow dirt road and you will see the sign and the parking area on the right. The side with the parking lot is a large loop with a short feeder back to the parking lot in the middle. Take the trail to the right and start on your way. At the first intersection send the fastest members of your party on the Cedar Swamp path to the right and have them race the slower members who continue will continue straight. The trails come back together again just before going down the hill to a bridge covering a moat. Cross the bridge carefully for two reasons - it can be slippery and it is guarded by a knight on the other side. He is carefully hidden on the far side and waits for the cunning traveler. Cross the bridge. From the far side take 17 paces. Look for the knight guarding the treasure you desire at 4 paces at 20o. After you have found the treasure continue on around the pond. At the next intersection take the trail at 180o to visit a beautiful old cemetary. Take the path back towards the pond. You will cross over a dam with a wonderful view of the pond. The day we placed the letterboxes there were great ice formations at the bottom of the dam. At the next intersection take the path at 140o. After several minutes walking keep your eyes open for the final resting place of the mummy. To the left at 300o, where there was once a large rock, mother nature has formed 3 natural sarcophagi as a resting place for the mummy. Search the first sarcophagus for the remains of the mummy. If you reach a small footbridge you have gone too far. When you have found the letterbox you can continue on the path back to the parking lot. .
