Difficulty: Clues easy, hike very difficult. This is a scramble of medium difficulty that can be attempted by most adults that are sure footed. It should only be done in dry conditions. Rain, snow and ice could put the hiker in a dangerous situation. It offers a nice challenge and rewarding views. It is not a place for children and pets. Note, this box was planted in winter and may have to be hidden better when the snow and ice are gone.

Clue Difficulty: Easy.

Directions: Park on Wintechog Hill Road which is just east of the casino and Lantern Hill Road, at the start of the CT portion of the Narragansett Trail.

Follow the blue blazes up the first large rise in the trail. At the top of this rise the first trail leading off to your right is the end of the Pequot Trail. Immediately after that down to your right is a small pool. After the pool take the trail leading off to the right, while the Narragansett trail continues on ahead slightly left up the hill. This mostly flat trail still offers some good views of the valley below. After passing some cliffs and rubble you will come to an old blast zone. Right after a small rock arch that you can crawl under there is a slide zone that you must cross. Approximately 20 paces after the slide zone take the barely noticeable trail that goes up to your left. This mostly scree and gravel trail is STEEP! Upon reaching a small landing take a breather… View Lantern Hill Pond behind you to the west. Now the scramble really begins.

This next section consists mostly of rock. There will be a cliff to your left and a steep wall to your right. Take the obvious way up. Take it slow and easy; there are plenty of nice views. Remember to use the three point climbing rule here. When you reach the key or slot in the rocks walk through and see three wind-buffeted pines acting as sentinels of the cliff. You can find the box at the base of the ledge to your right, to the east of the middle pine. The worst of the climb is over. Generally traverse up and to the east, until you finally reach the Narragansett trail. Although the portion before you reach the Narragansett trail is less steep, in wet or snowy weather a slip could be disastrous.
