Sermon for today:
One cannot re-install the rear brake master cylinder without first removing the brake arm from the foot-brake lever shaft, and one cannot re-install said brake arm if the external oil filter kit is in place.
This filter kit is proving to be a real pain in the bum.
If you don’t need to service the brakes then fine, but if the master cylinder has to come off then the filter housing and hoses have to come off first. I can’t wait to order a “Pilgrim Special” suction-side internal oil filter and fit it instead.
I curse the Merry Men of the Meriden Co-op for being so trendy as to fit a rear disc brake in the first place. Even the Japanese stuck with drum rear brakes for ages and ages. I mean, they work fine! More than adequate. And so much simpler in terms of linkages, and their various other bits & bobs. Cramming disc-brake apparati onto a bike that was not conceived with such things in mind means they have to use up valuable space. Space better employed for other things. Like external oil filter kits.
I also curse the Yanks for not standing firm against the Japanese invasion to insist that righteous gearshifts remain on the right. Sure, Harleys and Indians traditionally had shifts on the left and brake pedals on the right, but their shifts were traditionally hand-shifts. Anyway, since when was “what’s good for H-D” a factor in the thinking of 1970s road-safety policy-makers?
