My new ‘60s-type pancake airfilters have arrived.  I decided to get them rather than use my old K&N-type ones because I think they will filter better, and because they look nicer.

I fitted them on, and took the bike for a run out to Pacific Harbour to go and see Colin Head’s recently-acquired Harley WLA.  The Bonnie went like a rocket, though still occasionally missing the shift from 2nd to 3rd.  Damn.

The clutch has started slipping, and is getting worse.  Kicking the bike over sometimes results in the engine not turning at all.  It gives a feeling, as Mr Pilgrim puts it, “like kicking through poo”.  The bike is also pissing oil frm the sump plate.  The oil level dropped about 1in. in 45 minute of highway riding.

The engine pulls like a train, and feels really strong.

I phoned up Mr Pilgrim in Melbourne and invited him to edify me on several matters:

(1) Are the paper filter elements intended to be run dry?
Ans. Yes, but wash them in kerosene.  That leaves a little bit of residue which is good for them.

(2) Should I change the “Pilgrim Special” oil filter element at every single oil change?
Ans. No, at every second oil change is adequate.

(3) On a machine of indeterminate mileage and unknown history like this one, should I be paranoid about the crankshaft sludge trap?
Ans. Rest easy now that an oil filter has been added.  Simply wait until the next engine rebuild is due.  Don’t strip it down now just to check the sludge trap.

(4) My kickstart feels “soggy” when I operate it.  Is this from a slipping clutch?
Ans. The clutch outer plate should be flush (level) with the clutch basket.  If sunken, then the plates are worn.  Replace the springs.  But check it is adjusted correctly first.
