February 2004 Newsletter
Brownie Troop 2502 Cookie Sale Update The initial order for the troop as a whole was for 1628 boxes of cookies!! What a success! The girls worked very hard to meet the goal they had set for themselves. The troop goal voted upon was to earn enough money to have a party at Build-A-Bear. Not only did the girls earn enough for this, but also they have earned an end-of-the-year roller skating party! Sales continue through March 7, so the girls can continue to earn cookie credits and the troop can continue to earn money for activities and supplies. All rewards were budgeted for 50% of the troop’s cookie profit. The remaining 50% will be placed in the troop’s checking account to pay for troop operating expenses and activities, such as the upcoming Friends Around the World and Dancercize Workshop. Cookie Shop Our troop has signed up for a tabletop Cookie Shop in front of our local Blockbuster [location deleted from online version]. Our assigned time slot is February 20 between 4:00 and 9:00 pm. A sign up sheet will be available at the February 3, 10, and 17 meetings. You are free to participate as much or as little (or not at all) as you like. Credit for the sales made will be calculated based on how many boxes of cookies are sold total divided by the number of man (girl)-hours. These sales will not count towards the incentives, however they will continue to earn money for our troop and earn individual cookie credits for the girls. These cookie credits can be redeemed to help pay for summer camp (day camp or resident camp), for program events, and for Wider Opportunities. They can also be redeemed at The Girl Scout Store. Dance! Dance! Dance! Michelle has worked tirelessly to put together a Dancercize Workshop for our girls. [Date/time/location information deleted from online version]. During these 2 hours, the girls will be exposed to different styles of dance and take part in activities that will earn them the Dancercize Try-It, which they will take home with them that night. The workshop is for approximately 60 girls, so we will be inviting other Brownie troops to join us. This is a great opportunity for us to offset the costs of studio rental and instructors, as well as to mingle with other Brownie Girl Scouts from the Bluebonnet Trails community. If you will be unable to attend this function, please let Jessica or Michelle know right away so that we may fill all the available spots. Fewer girls participating translates to a higher cost per girl. Any cost for our girls to attend will be paid out of troop money. THANK YOU!! Thank you to Ray Castellano (Kailey’s Dad) and Crystal Lundy (Alissa’s Mom) for staying through the January 27th meeting to cut out Shrinky Dink shapes!! Our aching fingers appreciate you! J We have many more that require cutting – we are asked to bring SWAPS to share with 200 girls. If you’d be willing to help cut out the dinks, let Jessica or Michelle know. THANK YOU! Meeting Recaps January 6 – Welcome back and cookie info/goal setting. January 13 – Viewed cookie incentives. Took part in a Girl Scout recruitment going on in the same building. Drew slips of paper with research assignments on Ireland for Thinking Day. January 20 – Brownie Valentines. We made valentine cards to be distributed, along with many others, to government officials at the city/state/national level, school superintendents and principals, and many other community leaders. The reminder of the valentines will be distributed to senior citizen centers and nursing homes. Also discussed results from the research assignments. January 27 – Worked on finishing up our SWAPS for Thinking Day. The girls colored the “Sixes” and then took turns shrinking them (Shrinky Dinks). While not shrinking dinks, they took part in a discussion about Juliette Low, founder of Girl Scouts. Friends Around The World This annual Thinking Day event, put on by the Bluebonnet Trails Community, will be held 2/21/04 from 9:00 am to 11:30 am. As you know, our country is Ireland. The event will open with a parade of nations, during which we will carry the flag of Ireland. We will be manning our booth, as well as visiting the other booths. At our own booth, the girls will be sharing what they have learned about Girl Guides in Ireland, as well as handing out SWAPS and samples of Irish Soda Bread. At the other booths they will have the opportunity to learn about Girl Scouting/Girl Guiding around the world and collect SWAPS from the other troops. If you would like to volunteer to be a baker of Irish Soda Bread, we can provide you with the recipe. We also hope to use food coloring to tint butter green to serve with our bread. Again – volunteers welcome! Be sure to wear your Brownie vest to this event! |
