Boy Scouts has been an important part of my life for many years, particularly since February 1997 when I started out as Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 484 in Bakersfield, California, became Scoutmaster several months later, then moved on to Troop Committee Chairman in August of 2004. But Scouting actually began for me back in 1965, shortly after my 12th birthday, when I joined Troop 505 in Saratoga, California. My first Scoutmaster was Severence Hauck, an Eagle Scout with 65 merit badges, but later my Dad and Don Boren were Scoutmasters of Troop 505 as well. I became the first Eagle Scout of Troop 505 in 1969, at the age of 15, and moved to Troop 622 in Aptos, California, where I earned a total of 51 merit badges and two Silver Palms. I was also elected to Order of the Arrow, where I became a Brotherhood member of the Esselen Lodge and served as an Ordeal Master. Bill Bunner and Al Isaacs were my Scoutmasters with the Aptos troop. Unfortunately, college and career pushed Scouts aside about 1974, but I was left with many wonderful memories, one being when I attended the National Scout Jamboree the year before at Lake Coeur d'Alene in Idaho. Because of the tremendous impact that Scouts had on my life, I always wanted to give something back to the movement. So here I am today. It's great to be back.
