Troop 759 Activities Coordinator’s Report
Updated April 22, 2009
Upcoming Events:
April 25 - Mt. Hebron Spring Fair – Please support the church with this event. Sign ups are on the table in the hallway at the Hebron House.
May 1–3 - Backpacking (Dolly Sods) – Dolly Sods is a very unique environment. Our group will be doing some primitive backpacking in this wilderness area near Timberline Resort in West Virginia. Dale Walker is managing this event. The boys need to do some planning and a shake-down.
May 5, 12 and 19 - Red Cross CPR/First Aid Certification – This is a three week event that will be taught at the Hebron House. It is open to both boys and adults who want to be certified in CPR, First Aid and use of an automated electronic defibrillator (AED). The cost is $40. You must attend all three sessions. Funds are payable through the troop on or before the May 5 start date.
Annual Swim Test – May 6– we will schedule annual swim testing for the troop and crew. This cannot be done on a Tuesday. This is for adults, scouts and family members who plan to participate in water activities (swimming, canoeing, beach trip, rafting). We will do this test on Wednesday, May 6 at the Columbia Swim Center at 10400 Cross Fox Lane in Columbia, MD (410)-730-7000. Be at the pool and on the deck/ready to test at 7:30 PM.
June 13th (changed from May 9) - Mt Hebron “Adopt a Highway” Road Clean Up. We haven’t done this for about 4 years, but here is the plan: Start at 9:00 AM at the CVS parking lot at Route 40 and Centennial Lane out on the west end of Ellicott City. We will split into two teams and work opposite sides of Route 40 working east down to Greenway Drive. This usually takes about 2 hours. SERVICE HOURS.
May 22 - We Remember – Baltimore National Cemetery – this is the annual placement of flags at the grave of each person buried at the Baltimore National Cemetery on Frederick Road about one mile inside the beltway on the Friday evening before Memorial Day. The troop has participated in this event for decades. Please plan to attend and continue to honor our veterans. SERVICE HOURS.
May 29-31 - Backpacking [Philmont Crew]
May 30 – Scout Night at Oriole Park – The cost is $13 per person. We can get a group together if we get enough interest.
June 6 - Milford Mills Swimming – We always threaten to schedule a swimming event. This year we will actually do it. Milford Mill is an old quarry that has been in operation for longer than the 45 years our troop has been around. They have diving boards, monkey ropes, zip lines and other fun things to do.
June 9 - Court of Honor – Spring COH to be held during a regular Tuesday meeting. Originally scheduled for May 26 but moved because this is Centennial’s graduation and several families will miss this event.
June 13 – Howard County Boat Float – This is our annual attempt to build a cardboard boat that will: (a) float for long enough to carry four to six scouts for more than one race (b) win some awards for creativity, team spirit and maybe even speed. Mr. Smith and his family have whipped everyone for the past three years, although Mrs. Warner and her team staged a great effort that came close just one year after winning the Titanic Award for most dramatic sinking. Let’s see how our boys do in 2009.
