“Let’s do something different!” was the cry last May at Troop 267’s annual planning meeting. The boys, each year, suggest things they want to do to add to the fun and excitement of their outdoor program. “Let’s go on a bike trip!” Everyone agreed… and after a summer of planning, 18 TBS Boy Scouts embarked on a 16.8 mile bike-hike from Christopher Morley Park to Centre Island Beach. |

They met at 8 AM at the park to go over safety regulations, get their bikes inspected and to receive orange reflective vests. By 9 o’clock they were on their way. Weaving through Roslyn Estates and on through Roslyn Heights, they biked past the historic clock tower and on through the Village of Roslyn. Under the viaduct and through Roslyn Harbor, the boys passed the Swan Club and enjoyed the view along the harbor. After ascending the “killer hill” in Sea Cliff, they took a much-needed rest at Summit Park, overlooking the boats in the harbor and Glen Cove marinas. There was cloud cover, but the views were spectacular.
Onward and upward through the hills of Glen Cove, they crossed the viaduct over the 107 arterial highway and wended their way to the second rest stop, the Farmer’s Bazaar shopping center in Glen Cove. Some made a beeline for the Carvel, and others for the pizzeria. But with nearly 7 miles to go, the rest wasn’t nearly long enough.
Through the rolling hills of Lattingtown, along Skunk’s Misery Road, they passed the lush grounds of the estates and finally entered Bayville. Hardly distracted by Bayville’s arcades and boardwalk, they pedaled along the final stretch to Centre Island Beach Park. Tents were pitched and a campsite appeared on the beach. Swimming in the sound, frisbee games, bike races, and kite flying were the order of the day. And by the time dinner was done it was time to go back to Bayville to hit the arcades! Some played video games, others hit baseballs at the batting cages and still others enjoyed miniature golf with the dads that rode with us.
One might think that after such an exhausting day, the scouts would welcome some shuteye. But the boys, glad to see their old scouting friends after a long summer, stayed up past 2AM chatting, joking and telling stories about their summer exploits. The next morning the rain threatened, but never put a damper on the trip. After a hot cooked breakfast of pancakes and fruit-filled crepes, the boys went home proud that they had planned and made the trip. They had the satisfaction of putting their ideas and their words into action. Everyone knows that’s a great feeling to have.
Troop 267 goes camping once each month and is a PERFECT way for fathers to spend time with their sons, and our activities never conflict with the Jewish calendar! 8 spots remain open for this school year. Call 621-1634 about registration information for 11 – 17 year old boys. |
