Roslyn Scouts Spend the Night in Jail

December 12, 1999 - Manhasset, NY

Well, not the whole night.  And it wasn’t exactly a jail either… it was more like a lockup.  The boys of Troop 267 spent some time behind bars during a tour of the 6th Precinct in Manhasset as part of the Troop’s “Crime Prevention” unit.  Officer Bobby Browne demonstrated the computer in the police cruiser, and the operation of the new laser guns, which replaced the precinct’s radar equipment.  The boys got to see the intake area where fingerprints are taken, the “interview” room, the exercise gym, try on bulletproof vests and ask a million questions about weaponry, high-speed chases and the North Shore’s Most Wanted.  But this was only one of a number of informational events in the unit.

Officer Jonathan Wharton from the Nassau County Sheriff’s Department came down to the troop’s meeting place to explain the differences between the police and the sheriff in Nassau County.  The boys learned about juvenile detention and the family court, about property and income executions, and they asked a million questions about weaponry, high-speed chases and the North Shore’s Most Wanted.  We were also visited by Officer Sullivan of the Nassau County Police, who spoke about evidence, identification, and the exclusionary rule.  And the boys asked a million questions about weaponry, and… well, you get the idea.

The troop will visit the criminal court to observe real-life arraignments, and will be taught how to take and catalog fingerprints and will perform a community service project in December and January.  They will run a “Kid-Pics” program for children in nursery, kindergarten and first grade.  At no cost, parents can bring their children to the temple, and have ID cards made for positive identification. Each child’s fingerprints and photograph will be laminated onto a card.  Parents keep the only copy of the card and save it in case the unthinkable happens.  Please watch for notices coming home with your children.  The ID cards are free, and no copies are retained.

Troop 267 is the Roslyn area’s only Scout Troop.  We teach self-reliance, leadership, and responsibility to the community at weekly meetings, on monthly camping trips and in an optional summer camp program. The troop is open to all boys, ages 11 - 18, and the Cub Scout Pack is open to all boys 6 - 10.  If you have a son or grandson who could benefit from the scouting program, call 621-1634 for registration information.
