The programming at Onteora is perfect for all skill levels and the boys (ages 11 through 16) had the time of their lives.  Scout camp is not like other sleep-away camps.  It is more rustic, by design, and allows each scout to determine his own program.  First year campers can attend the Dan Beard Program.  Named for one of Scouting’s founders, the program provides a safely supervised environment for instruction of the basic scouting skills. Whether cooking, using map and compass, or basic first aid, the younger boys get an opportunity to practice their skills and earn the requirements for Scouting’s primary ranks.

Also available is the merit badge program.  There are about 120 merit badges scouts can earn on the trail to Eagle Scout. Some are electives and some are required; each merit badge is a mini-course in a particular subject. Rather than a mere survey of a skill, it allows the boys to delve in more deeply and to really get their arms around a subject.  Although merit badges are offered in many vocational and professional fields like Law, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Fire Safety, Crime Prevention, Plumbing, Woodworking, and Aviation, others are offered in particular skills and academic areas like public speaking, physics, chemistry, mammal study, pulp and paper, and soil and water conservation.  At camp, boys generally focus on “outdoor badges” like camping, backpacking, hiking, swimming, lifesaving and environmental science – or crafts like woodcarving, basketry, metalworking, and more.

“Our boys did great this summer,” said Mr. Theodoropoulos.  “They were able to mix all the fun of summer camp with their advancement in the Scouting program.  We had 12 boys go to camp this year – I bet we’ll hit 20 next summer.”  Particularly successful, this summer, were Mineola’s Wil Forero and East Williston’s Emory Kukor, both 14, who are on track to become Eagle Scouts.

Troop 267 meets weekly and goes camping once each month during the academic year. The Troop has an aggressive leadership training and advancement program, and places an emphasis on teamwork and self-reliance. Please contact Steve Cahn at 516-621-3890 for information about joining the troop.
Roslyn’s Troop 267, led by Scoutmaster George Theodoropoulos, returned form a week at summer camp.  Onteora Scout Reservation is the official camp of the Theodore Roosevelt Council which oversees all Scouting in Nassau County.  The camp itself is nestled in the Catskill Mountains near the town of Livingston Manor and the Delaware River. This is the camp’s 50th anniversary and the boys were thrilled to be part of the celebration.
