Les served in a variety of Australian units including 4 Supply Platoon / 25 Supply Platoon (part of 5 Company in Vietnam
from 1968 - 1969 / 1969 - 1971), 1 Recruit Training Battalion, Kapooka (as an
instructor 1971 -1973), 3 Supply Depot, 33 Supply Battalion, Royal Australian Army Ordnance Centre
Bandiana, 331 Supply Company, & 32 Supply Battalion. Phew! In all, he
served from 1967 till 1986, emerging as a Warrant Officer. Aceman, who is
married & originally comes from Tasmania but now lives much further north,
lists Golf, Cricket & Motor Racing as his hobbies.
Ø Edward Allsop (M) Nom de Guerre
= Brummie
Brummie was one of the Brits who came out & fought with the Rhodesian
Light Infantry (sometimes known as the Rhodesian Foreign Legion), serving
in Recce Troop, Support Commando, from 1976-1978. He mentioned quite a few
names that might ring a few bells with you other ex-Saints, like Tim Carmody,
Terry Tagney, Joe Prinsloo, Richy Clifford, Dietmar Hack, Neil Hooley, Colour
Sergeant Strydem, Cpl Maurice Marais, Mike Webb, Pat Armstrong & Major
Nigel Henson. Eddie is married, lives in England & lists rugby as his main
hobby.

Andy served in Princess Pat's Canadian
Light Infantry (Airborne) from August '93 till November '98, including a
spell in Bosnia. Andy, who emerged as a Corporal, is married & now lives in
Alberta & lists his hobbies as Firearms, Running, & Drinking.

Nom de Guerre = 31Inf
Andrew is part of our Canadian chapter, having been born in New
Brunswick but now living in Ontario. He served with the Canadian Army, in
such units as the Royal Canadian
Regiment, Special Service
Force SSF HQ and Signals Sqn, 2 Combat Engineer Regiment and
2
CMBG,
from January 1986 till September 2001, finishing up as a Master Corporal. He
is now married, works as a railway conductor, and lists his hobby as '4
wheelin''.

de Guerre = Bariteau
Louis has served in the Canadian
Grenadier Guards Reserve unit since December 1989. Bariteau, who lives in
Montreal, is now a Sergeant. He found the IVA via another member.

Niekie,
as his name suggests, is originally from South Africa but now resides in New
Zealand. His military service began in 1979, after which he served in the SA
Infantry School, the SADF Equestrian Centre (Deployed with SWA Spes),
the State Presidents Guard, and 115 Battalion. His service ended
in 1994, when he came out as a Captain. Bass, who is married and works as a
Security Manager, is very interested in sport and was kind enough to refer to
the IVA as a " wonderful idea".

BELL Jr (M)
Nom de Guerre = 91stsps
Sam, part of the IVA's largest branch, the USA, served in US Air Force;
to be exact, he served in the 91st and 51st Security Police Sq USAF, plus the 90th
Security Police Group USAF, from March 1983 till June 1988, emerging as a
Sergeant. Sam, who is married, now works as a Security Consultant and Special
Police Officer, and lists his hobby as collecting USAF Police Unit Patches. Sam
is also a member of the Air Force Security Police Association.
Ø Adrian Bellini (M) Nom
de Guerre = Ade
Ade, now living in Sweden, began his military career with the British Royal Navy but then moved to 45
Commando Royal Marines. Ade, who
served from May 1978 till May 1986, finished his time as a Medical Assistant.

Tintin served in France’s 27e Battalion
Chassuers Alpins back in the early 1980s & emerged as a Corporal. He
now lives in Ireland.
Ø Robert Benjamin (M) Nom
de Guerre = Boats
Boats is a South African, having served in (amongst other units) the 4th South African Infantry & 4 Recce between 1981 & 1989,
including a spell as Base Sergeant Major of Ondorrorondo reaction forces from
Feb 1987 to Mar 1989. He finished up as a Staff Sergeant & due to past
political sensitivities, he changed his legal surname in 1993.
Ø Lars Bergqvist (M) Nom de Guerre
= Larshenning
Lars had the privilege of being the IVA's 100th member! He served with the Royal Swedish Naval Reserve before
being seconded to the United Nations
as a Military Observer, serving as a
Captain in such places as Sarajevo & Macedonia, for 3 spells between 1986
& 1995. Lars, who is married & works as a sea captain, lives in Sweden
& lists his interests as Skiing, swimming & reading. Lars is our first
UN Military Observer but remembering some of the things those guys went
through, he's welcome to our ranks.
Ø Rune Bjørnsen (M) Nom de Guerre
= Bilbo
Bilbo was our 2nd member from Norway, having served in the Sambands
Regimentet, Troms Landforsvar, & Akershus Regiment,
including service in KFOR in Kosovo & UNIFIL in Lebanon,
between April 1989 & September 2000, ending up as a corporal. Bilbo, who is
single & now works as an IT support technician, likes Photography, hunting,
& fishing.
Ø Hugh Bomford
(M) Nom de Guerre
= HB
Hugh was the IVA's first
member in New Zealand but had served in 1 & 4 Independent Companies, 4th
Rhodesia Regiment (from which he emerged as a Corporal), as well as a spell
with the Police Anti-Terrorist Unit (PATU, a unit that
wore army uniforms & operated in some very remote & often dangerous
parts of the war zone), between 1976 & 1980. He's married, lists reading as
his hobby, & found us via a Rhodesian link.

Kevin BRIANT (M) Nom de Guerre = Treasure
Kevin is a veteran of Australia's 1st Armoured Regt., in which he
served from Jan 1964 till Jan 1970, emerging as a Sergeant. He now lives in
Busselton, Western Australia & describes himself as retired. He passes his
time in a commendable way, helping handicapped veterans, which deserves the
gratitude of us all.

Robert Philip Brick (M) Nom de Guerre = Redrock
Robert served with the us
Infantry between January 1966 & January 1968, including service with the Military Assistance Command Vietnam
(MACV) & parachute training. Redrock, who ended up as a 1st lieutenant,
is single, lives in New Jersey, & lists hunting, fishing, & coin
collecting as his hobbies. He first heard about the IVA in ‘Soldier of Fortune’
magazine.

Bryan (M) Nom de Guerre
= Troopie
Ol' Troopie began his military career in 1972 in the Foreign Legion, initially
in the 5e Regt. Mixte du Pacifique
& then, having grown bored with soldiering in Polynesia, in the 2e Regt. Etranger du Parachutistes. On
returning home, he enlisted in the
Rhodesian Light Infantry but was injured by a landmine & so transferred
to a government desk job, serving in the British
South Africa Police Reserve while doing so. Troopie is married & lives
in Tokyo, Japan, where he works as a freelance English teacher & editor.
Hobbies are Rugby, travel, reading, friends,
& (of course) the IVA.

= Macadubh
Donald served in the British Royal Air
Force from April 1975 till April 1987, emerging as a Corporal. Macadubh is
married & now lives in Scotland where he works as a Nurse Manager. He lists
his hobbies as Family History, Reading & Further education & stumbled
onto our home page via a link.

de Guerre = Outlaw
Outlaw is a veteran of the US Marine
Corps, in which he served from January 1979 till April 1985. During this
time, Outlaw saw service in the UK, Okinawa (twice), Korea, France (twice),
Belgium & Holland, finishing as a Corporal. Outlaw, who is married &
lives in the state of Indiana, lists reading, hiking & camping as his
interests.

de Guerre = Patrick
Patrick is a resident of Paris, France. Patrick served as a "Lieutenant de
Reserve" until 1998 & now works as a marketing analyst in Paris.
Patrick, who is single, lists his hobbies as defence affairs & geostrategy.
Ø Dennis Cave (M) Nom
de Guerre = Ringer
Ringer was in the British Royal Air Force from June 1947 till October 1949,
including time spent in what was then Malaya. Ringer, who is married &
originates from Swindon in England but now lives in Ontario, Canada, is a
retired manufacturing engineer & lists Computers & Barbershop Quartets
as his hobbies.
Ø James CERINI (M) Nom de Guerre = Starlight
This Australian member was introduced to the 'joys' of IVA membership by our very own Ironside. He served in more than one Australian Army unit, including the Royal Australia Regiment and the 1st Combat Engineer Regiment, between September 1989 and July 1996. A single guy (lucky sod), James is presently studying Information Technology at school with the view to becoming a systems engineer. James lists his hobbies as reading, computers, cooking and fly fishing.
Ø Michael A. CESSNA (M) Nom de Guerre = Limping Gator
Limping Gator (there just has to be a good story behind that NDG) is part of our large USA branch, originally coming from Ohio but now living in Texas. He served with the US Marine Corps from October '84 till November '90, in such units as the 1st Recruit Training Regiment, MCRD San Diego, Support
Battalion, Marine Corps Base Camp, Pendleton (school), 1st Landing Support Battalion, 1st Force, Service Support Group (FSSG), 9th Motor Trans.
Battalion, 3rd FSSG, and the 1st Light Armored Vehicle Battalion, 1st, Marine Division, emerging as a Private First Class. Michael, who is single, lists his hobbies as history, firearms, cooking, writing and science, and works in the Security industry.

Dave spent his military career in Britain's Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers, serving from 1963 till 1978. He now lives in Western
Australia.

Kid served in the Rhodesian Light
Infantry from 1974 till 1978, when he moved to the British South Africa Police (as an Instructor with the Support
Unit), serving there until 1981. Kid, who lives in Australia, is married &
owns & operates a Snap-On Tools franchise. His hobbies are golf & rugby
(he's an accredited referee).

A former Captain in the Rhodesian Light
Infantry, John, who served from 1977 till 1979 in 3 & Support Commando,

Izak Cornelissen (M) Nom
de Guerre = Sakka
Sakka lives in South Africa's Kwa-Zulu Natal province & served in South
Africa's 1 Para Battalion & 44 Para Brigade (SANDF), which he did
between June 1977 & Sep 1999, ending up as a Warrant Officer class 1 (RSM).
Sakka, together with his wife, he manages a Truck Inn surrounded by many
Anglo/Boer War Battle fields such as Spioenkop, Colenso, etc. Sakka enjoys
computers & collecting airborne wings.
Ø Mark Craig (M) Nom
de Guerre = Buffalo Soldier
Mark served in South Africa's 32
Battalion but before that, he spent some time with the Rhodesian Engineers. Buffalo (if you know the 32nd's nickname &
badge, you'll understand his choice of tag), who served altogether from 1974
till 1997 & came out as a Warrant Officer 1, now lives in South Africa.
Ø Steve Crane (M) Nom
de Guerre = Craniac
Originally from Scotland but now in South Africa, Steve served in
the 3rd SA Infantry & the Regiment President Kruger between
January 1982 & October 1993, finishing up as a Corporal. Craniac, who is
married & lives in the Cape, lists computers, reading, & woodwork as
his hobbies.
Ø Greg CRAWFORD
(M)
Nom de Guerre = Chinky
Greg is part of the Rhodesian section, having served in the Rhodesian Light
Infantry -- our most served-in unit. To
be exact, he joined with intake 160 back in June 1977 and then served in the
Technical wing Signals Squadron (Brady Barracks, Bulawayo). He finished his
service in April 1980 as an Acting Sergeant. He now lives south of the border in
South Africa, where he works in the Casino Slots department of a well known
hotel. A married man, he lists his hobbies as camping. the bush and fishing.
Ø Owen Harold Croft (M) Nom
de Guerre = Kosie
Kosie was our 1st member from Malawi but as his NDG reveals, his military
service was spent further south. Kosie (this name was given him by an RSM,
derived from an Afrikaans comic character) was born in Jo'burg & served in
a variety of South African units including 1
Infantry School, 1 Parachute Battalion & 44 Parachute Brigade, starting back in January 1979 & finishing
in November 1990, having worked his way up through the ranks to Captain. Kosie
owns & manages a Safari Lodge on beautiful Lake Malawi & so his
interests not surprisingly include game management, wildlife & fishing, as
well as skydiving (he was actively involved with the SADF Skydiving team for 4
years & toured France, Germany & Switzerland), light aircraft aviation
(PPL) & scuba diving. Apart from the IVA, Kosie is also active in the MOTHs
& the LAARSA (Legion Associated Airborne RSA).

This member of our Canadian chapter has had quite a varied military career,
beginning back in 1961 with the 2nd Royal Highlanders of Canada, before
moving onto 2 Rhodesian African Rifles and ending up in South Africa's 32
Battalion. Jack, who is single, now works as a Contract Administrator in
Canada, and lists Fishing, Curling and History as his main hobbies.
Ø Andy Dainty (M) Nom
de Guerre = Benjidog
Andy served in Britain's Royal Marines
from June 1974 till October 1997. Benjidog, who completed his service as a
Warrant Officer, now lives in Scotland where he works in the field of adult
training & obviously keeps himself in trim, as his listed hobbies are
outdoor pursuits & physical fitness!
Ø Gerard DAMBRY (M) Nom de Guerre = ARTHUR
Gerard was one of those rare men who served with the Foreign legion but wasn't in the Foreign Legion. Arthur, who is French, served in the 2ème regiment du Génie (engineers) & then moved to my old unit, the 5e Regt. Mixte du Pacifique. Now this unit was, as the name suggests, mixed, meaning French & Legion engineer troops together in Polynesia. However, whereas I served there in the 1970s, Arthur served before me, his military career running from July 1961 till December 1964. Arthur, who is married & works as a painter/calligrapher, lists his hobbies as designing, building & reprocessing replica vehicles.
Ø Elizabeth J Davis (M) Nom
de Guerre = Davisej
Elizabeth served in the US Marine Corps
from March 1974 till Sept. 1978, emerging as a Corporal. Davisej is now living
in North Carolina, USA, & works as a Police Dispatcher. Not surprisingly,
her hobbies are collecting police patches & pins.
Ø Karl DAVIES (A) Nom
de Guerre = Veldskoon
Although born in Wales, Karl now lives in South Africa & saw service with the South African Police Reserve between August 1985 & August 1993. (For those of you outside SA, the South African Police Reserve is/was an integral part of the SA Police Force, with exactly the same powers as regular police officers & serving side by side with them under a variety of circumstances, including the detective branch.) Karl, who emerged from his police service as a Sergeant, is married, likes golfing, fishing & reading, & works as a Sales Engineer.
Ø David A. Dawson Jr. (M) Nom
de Guerre = TopDaws
David retired from the US Army,
in March 2000 and is currently serving as the Vice President, Government
Services for BedRock IT Solutions, a company he started with fellow retiree,
Command Sergeant Major Roger Stradley.
TopDaws, who still lives in Kentucky, enlisted back in July 1978 &
has built a home. What's more, his son,
Corporal David Dawson III, is a mortarman in C Company, 1st Battalion, 502nd
Infantry stationed at Fort Campbell Kentucky, currently on a mission of war against
terrorism with his unit. He came across the IVA via a link.

de Guerre = Freeserve
Having served in the Rhodesian Light
Infantry Support Commando from 1975
till 1977, Willem now lives in Southern England.
Ø Jim de Turt (M) Nom
de Guerre = Jimmy the Boong
A veteran of the 1st Armoured Regt, he
served in the Australian Army from Oct 1958 till Feb. 1986, not just in this
unit but also in the 2nd Battalion Royal
Australian Regt., the Queensland Mounded Infantry, 2nd Cavalry Regt., Royal
Australian Engineers, Nor-Force (Recon), & the Pilbara Regt., with active duty in Malaya (1960-63) & Vietnam
(1969-71) emerging as a Warrant Officer Two. A married man, Jimmy also belongs
to the SAS Assn, the RAAC (Armoured Corps) Assn, the RAE Assn., the
Malaya-Borneo Assn., & is President of the Veterans Legion of Australia.
Listing his interests as the Bush & Writing, he says he would be pleased to
see anyone passing through Western Australia.
Ø Cristiano Degasperi (M) Nom
de Guerre = Gandalf
Cristiano served in Italy's Carabinieri
(in the Paracadutisti & G.I.S. (Counter-terrorism) units, to
be exact) from 1983 till 1990, emerging as a Sergeant. Gandalf, who is married
& now works as a security consultant in Rome, saw service in Beirut in 1983
& still enjoys parachuting, having jumped in the USA, Portugal &
Britain. He's a member of the Italian section of the "Federation
Internationale Anciens Combattants Allies" & lists his other hobbies
as scuba diving & shooting.

John served in the 2nd Battalion,
Parachute Regiment (UK) from 1962 till 1979 & reached the rank of WO2.
JayDee, who is very active in his local branch of the Parachute Regiment
Association, lives in Scotland,

= John
John served in the 5th South African
Infantry & then did almost 10 years in the Natal Carbineers. He is now
serving in the Cape Town Highlanders & lives in Paarl, South Africa.
Ø Paul J Els (M) Nom
de Guerre = Victor
Paul served in South Africa's 5th
Reconnaissance Regiment, the School of Signals, & the 5 Infantry battalion between Jan 1964
& Oct 1996, emerging with the rank of Warrant Officer 1. Paul, who is
married & lives in Gauteng province, is a committee member of the SA
Special Forces League & first contacted us in relation to his book on the
South African Recces.
Ø Michael EMBLETON (M) Nom de Guerre = Skiescall
Not only is Mike another member of the airborne fraternity, having served in the British 7 Parachute Regiment Royal Horse Artillery between June 1982 and September 1997, emerging as a Bombardier (corporal), but he also reflects the truly international nature of this 'Band of Brothers', for he was born in Germany. However, he now lives in a beautiful part of Scotland, where he works for the Post Office. A married man, Mike's main hobby is Mountain Climbing.
Ø Manuel Ferreira (M) Nom de Guerre
= Parat
Our 1st member living in Portugal (although he was born in beautiful
Mozambique) served for 7 years in the South African Defence Force, 2 years as a
National Service Man (conscript) & 5 years with the regulars, including
some time with that famous oxymoron, Military Intelligence. He also served a
spell with the South African Air Force (60 SQN), emerging in 1993 as a Staff
Sergeant. Parat is married (to a former career officer in the SADF) & lists
his hobbies as military research on Southern African wars, African Military
Aviation & collecting anything SADF.
Ø Fernando Fernandes
(M) Nom
de Guerre = Amadora
Fernando was our first veteran of the Portuguese military, having served in the
famous Commandos Regiment from
September 1977 till September 1979. Amadora, who is married & runs his own
company in Canada, is still active in the military, being a serving member of
17th (Recce) Regiment in the Canadian Armed Forces Reserve. He lists his
hobbies as shooting & running.
Ø Nelson Fischbach (M) Nom
de Guerre = Fish
Fish served in a variety of military units, including the US 82nd
Airborne Div (2/504th), the US 1/509th Airborne Regt. in Italy, the
South African 44 Para. Brigade (the Pathfinders) & 32Bn. Buffalo
Regt. (Recce Group), the US 6/327th Airborne & the US 5th Div 4/6th
Mechanised Infantry, finishing with the rank of Corporal. Fish lives in
Massachusetts, USA.

= Jen
Jen served with the Rhodesian African Rifles from 1976 till 1980, but now lives in South Africa. Jen,
whose hobbies are dancing & walking, would love to hear from anyone from
1RAR or in fact anyone in the world to correspond with.
Ø Christopher Game (M) Nom
de Guerre = Meatpie
Chris is another former South African soldier, but with a slight difference --
he was a Redcap! He served in the South African Corps of Military Police
(North West Command) between January 1984 & December 1985, emerging as a
Corporal. Meatpie, who is married & now lives in western England, also did
about 8 years of reserve-type training camps, in the old SA way. He now works
in the Pharmaceutical Industry & lists his hobbies as Motorcycles
/Motorsport & Military History.
Ø Ken Gaudet (M) Nom de Guerre = Uitlander
Ken's military career that began back in '69 when he enlisted in the US 173rd Airborne Brigade, although he
went on to serve as rappelling instructor for West Point & ROTC cadets. He
finished his US Army service as a Sergeant in 1975. Then, in 1979, he resumed
his military life by joining the Rhodesian
Light Infantry (Support Commando, Recce Troop), where he eventually served
as Troop Medic. His Rhodesian military career ended (as it did for many of us)
in September 1980 but Ken hadn't finished with Africa, for he then joined South
Africa's 44 Parachute Brigade,
Pathfinder Company, where he remained until 1981, finishing up a corporal.
Ken, who is married & lives in California, enjoys writing, reading, &
outdoor activities. He now works as a Private Investigator.

Beltran GIMENEZ (M)

Liberto
Liberto is our first Spanish member, born in Barcelona -- yet more proof that
the IVA is indeed International. He served in both the Spanish Army and the Légion
Etrangere. To be exact, he first served in the Brigada Paracaidista
(Spain's premier infantry and conventional special operations unit, otherwise
known as Bripac). Then, in 1984, he joined the Légion, serving in the 1ere
Regiment, the 5e Regiment and the 1ere REC cavalry regiment.
He left in 1999 with the rank of Sergent-Chef. He now lives in Northern Ireland,
where he appropriately works as a Chef, listing his hobbies as women, music,
animals, and cooking.
Ø Hillel N. Goldstein (M) Nom
de Guerre = Dragon
Our first veteran of the Israeli Defence Force served in the Israeli Air Force, Dragon Mobile
Anti-Aircraft Unit from February 1983 till January 1986, emerging as a
Staff Sergeant. Dragon, who is married & now lives in New York State, USA,
lists his hobbies as bass playing, handguns & nature. He read about the IVA
in Soldier of Fortune magazine.
Ø Brian Gombart

= Osprey
Brian served in a variety of units including the Selous Scouts, Rhodesian Signals, Rhodesian Pay Corps, the Rhodesia
Regiment & 5/7 Recce (South Africa), reaching the rank of Sergeant.
Osprey also spent some time at Tsanga
Lodge, a rehabilitation centre for wounded Rhodesian troops that I'm sure
some other members also know. He now lives in South
Africa,
Ø Pete Gombart

= Colour
Osprey's brother began his military career in 1967, with the Rhodesian Light Infantry. He went on to
serve with the Selous Scouts &
then South Africa's 4 Recce,
reaching the rank of Colour Sergeant. Colour now lives in South Africa, is
married & lists his hobbies as Music from 60's, diving & rugby. Colour
said he's 'open to communication from any person who had the guts to stand up
for freedom. Don't just die, make a statement. Be proud of who you are and what
you have done. Let no man ridicule you, for we are a breed of our own.'

= Gonzo
Gonzo served in the Rhodesia Regt.
(A Co., 10 Battalion) between July 1972 (Intake 133) & 1976. He is
originally from the Redcliff/Kwe Kwe area of Rhodesia but now lives in New
South Wales, Australia. Gonzo, who is married & works as an electrician,
lists his hobbies as Music, Bowls & Fishing & he would like to hear
from Rhodies with similar interests.

Chevy has been serving (now as a sergeant) with the Mascotte Police Department (Florida) since 1988. Chevy, who is
originally from New York City, is single & lists computers & scuba as
his hobbies.
Ø Alexandr GULTYAEV (P) Nom de Guerre = Alex Alex was a real milestone for the IVA, being our first member in Russia! Alex is a serving Police Detective (Captain) in the city of Vladivostok, which actually makes him the closest member to IVA HQ! Shamdog is originally from Los Angeles but now lives in New Jersey. A married
man, Shamdog is Secretary/Treasurer of the COHORT Chapter of the 82nd Airborne

Bill had a truly Southern African career. He started off (in January 1968) in the South African Airforce, where he stayed until December 1975, emerging as a Sergeant. Then, in 1978, he joined the Department of the Prime Minister - Rhodesia, where he stayed until January 1980, leaving as a STO (Senior Technical Officer). Originally from Pretoria, Bill still lives in South Africa and works as a sales executive. He lists his hobbies as flying, motorcycling, motor racing, motorcycle racing, etc.

a Corporal. DJ, who comes originally from Detroit but now lives in Florida, is
presently a part-time Police officer (& teaches in the police academy) in
what he describes as 'a small, run-down, high incident area'. Before this, he
worked as a State Police Officer (1 year) & a County Police Officer (7
years), where he worked as a narcotics agent, patrol officer & 5-year
member of the Special Weapons & Tactics unit. (He tells me that he saw more
action there in one year than 4 ½ in the Marines!). DJ, who is married &

Family as her hobbies. Her initial comments on applying to join this noble band

Our 1st veteran of the Croatian Army, Daniel served in the 83rd Independent Guards Battalion during the Croatian War of
Independence in 1991-92. Daniel, who is married & lives in Southern

Forces International Volunteers Association', or, if your tongue is fit enough,
Udruga Medunarodnih Dragovoljaca Hrvatskih Oruzanih Snaga! This group, with
which the IVA is proud to be associated, was formed in September 1995 in
England, to honour the memory of those foreign citizens who fought for the
people of Croatia & Bosnia-Herzegovina, & to provide a central point
for the different foreign citizens who fought for the Republic of Croatia &
the Federation of Bosnia-Herzegovina, to provide a sense of friendship and

Brian was a welcome addition to our Légion Etrangère chapter, especially as he served in my old unit, albeit more recently than I did. His military career began in the Royal Guards of Denmark, which he joined in 1985. Then, in January 1988, he moved to the Légion, serving in both the 2ème Regiment Etrangère des Parachutists & the Detachement De La Légion Etrangère De Mayotte, emerging in July 2003 as a Caporal-Chef. A bachelor, he has now returned to Denmark, where he works as a butcher. However, he isn't taking things too easy, as he lists his hobbies as 'diving, martial arts, sky diving & many more'.

Paul served with the US Marine Corps
from 1968 till 1970, including time with a Marine rifle company of the Marine
Air Wing, with 11 months at Marble Mountain Air Facility & the surrounding
area near Da Nang, Vietnam, & emerged as a Corporal. Harden, who lives in
Utah, then went on to serve in the National Guard in '71 as a Combat Engineer
for 6 years & then transferred to Company B, 1st Battalion, 19th Special
Forces Group (Airborne) & served there 3 years. In 1979, he transferred
into the US Army Reserves & spent the rest of his military career serving a
few weeks each year training with Engineer & Special Forces units all over
the country & a couple of overseas tours. In 1981 he went on active duty
with the army for 6 months at Ft Drum, New York. Harden, who is married &
lists Hunting, Family, & Mountain 4X4 as his hobbies, mentioned that he had
a good friend he met on active duty with the USAR in '81 who had served in the
Rhodesian African Rifles around '73-'75, & it was his acquired interest in
Rhodesia that led him to surf onto us!

Enlisting as a 17 year old in the Royal Australian Regt in May 1962, Sam
went on to enter the Australian SAS (Special Air Service) -- 1 company,
to be exact -- in 1963. He remained with this unit after it became a regiment
in 1964 & served in almost all the Squadrons during his time & was on
the strength of 4 Sqn before it was disbanded. He served in Borneo with 2 SAS
Sqn in 1966, in Vietnam with 1 SAS Sqn in 1967, & then served in 3 SAS Sqn
1970 - 1976. He retired in July 1976 as a Corporal (Patrol Commander).
Unfortunately, like quite a few guys who went through wars like Vietnam, Sam is
on a disability pension. He is married & lives in Western Australia, lists
fishing & calligraphy as his hobbies, & has a strong interest in issues
affecting veterans worldwide.

Mouse (who comes from Bulawayo but now lives in England) served in the Rhodesian

Rhodesiana & building Computers. He very modestly says that 'I never did
anything special & no one has any reason to remember me, no war stories to

Part of our US branch, living up in the Pacific Northwest, David served in the 325th Airborne Infantry, 82nd Airborne

elementary school teacher, enjoying fly-fishing when he's away from class.

Born in Cuba -- Guantanamo Bay US Naval Station to be exact -- Yankee-2 spent
over 20 years in the US Army (between 1965-86), serving in such units as 2/509 Airborne Infantry, HHC 5/6 Mechanised
Infantry, A Company (Ranger), 75 Infantry, 8 Special Forces Group (Airborne),
3/7 Special Forces Group (Airborne), US Army INTEL SPT Activity, & the US Army Field Artillery School, amongst others. Now living in California, he
still has a strong connection with the military, serving as a Signal Sergeant
Major in the California State Military Reserve (CSMR), which is a State Defence
Force/Militia that supports the California National Guard & assumes their state duties if/when the
National Guard is federally activated & leaves the state. Listing his
hobbies as amateur radio & collecting elite forces stuff, Richard is
married & works as an Engineering Technician.

sergeant. As soon as I heard he had been in the military, I asked him in &
he was hooked! Anyway, Gremlin, who was born & still lives in Indiana, USA,
served in the US Army, namely, Eagle Troop, 2 Squadron, 11 Armoured
Cavalry & Headquarters Troop, 3 Squadron, 4 Cavalry, between
June 1992 & October 1994, emerging as a Specialist (equivalent to
Corporal). He's single & lists his hobbies as football, baseball, &
military history. He's presently a student, pursuing a major in history at

Uwe was our first member in Germany but he spent his military career in the 5 South African Infantry, to be specific, in 5 Signals Unit Wonderboom EW Electronic Warfare/ 511 TP Bush Recon Unit for Signal HQ Grootfontein SWA, between Feb 1987 and Feb 1990, emerging as a Lance -Corporal. Previously resident in the Cape, he is married and works in the Stores/Logistics profession back in his native Germany.

Bill was the first member of the IVA & even though he wasn't on-line, he
still took a lively interest. Born in Ohio, USA, he served in the US Marine
Corps during the Pacific War, including service in Guadalcanal, & then
went into the reserve after VJ day. However, when the Korean War started, he
went back to active service & once again saw front line combat. After his
military career, he became a teacher, spending over 20 years in Guam before
coming to Japan. His sad demise at the age of 77 marked the end of a life of
service & courage, & so I have no intention of removing him from the
IVA's rollcall.

Paul is the 3rd IVA member to have served in the Légion's 2e REP (2nd
Foreign Parachute Regt), between 1983and 1988 -- to be exact, in C.E.A., Section
d'eclairage et reconiassance and the Section Milan 2. He saw tours in the
Central African Republic (Bouar) and Chad (N'djamena). Before that, he had
served in a reserve infantry battalion of the
British Royal Green Jackets. Now living in SE England, he is single,
works as an Office Manager, and has an interest in Edged Weapons.

Swampy came to us as an old comrade of our own Kid, having served in the
Rhodesian Light Infantry (in 2 Troop, 1 Commando, to be exact) & the
Shamva PATU (Police Anti Terrorist Unit) back in Rhodesia between
January 1974 & January 1978, emerging as a Corporal. Swampy, who is married
& enjoys golf, was born in Bindura, Rhodesia but now lives in Queensland,

Veedog served over 27 years in the US Army & ended his time as a Staff
Sergeant in the 961st (Heavy) Engineer
Battalion (Combat) in June of this 1999, a group he refers to as 'a
colorful band of brothers.' Veedog began his military career in the US Army's aviation
branch in 1970, where he worked as a helicopter airframe repairman. After a
spot of 'excitement' in SE Asia, he had a short break in service to try out
life on Civvy Street, but (as most of us know only too well), it was pretty
boring. Within the year he rejoined the Army through the Reserves &

Probably our most northerly member, living in Finland. He served as a
Lieutenant in the Finnish Armoured
Brigade in the late 1970s & still belongs to the Association of the Finnish Reserve Officers. His hobbies
are weight lifting, jogging, music, & he is also interested in the French
Foreign Legion.

de Guerre = Karlos
Karl enlisted in the US Army back in 1987 & is serving in the US Army's 82nd Airborne Division, 3rd
Special Forces Group as a Staff Sergeant, currently working on a Military
Free Fall (HALO) team as the Senior Weapons Sgt. Karlos, who lives in North
Carolina, United States, plans to be in the military at least until 2007. He
has an interest in 20th century military history, including all aspects of
Rhodesian and South African related subjects. He says he's done a few tours in
Africa since '93 and has also worked with units from the French Army, namely
the 1er RPIMA & the 13e RDP.

Simmo served in the Rhodesian/Zimbabwe
Air Force from March 1970 till November 1982 & finished up as a
Squadron Leader. Simmo, who lives in Singapore (at last, another member in
Asia!), is still flying, albeit in more comfortable & up-to-date aircraft
than back in Rhodesia.

Nom de Guerre = Sapper
Tom is one of the 'Crippled Eagles', meaning those Americans who came out to
Rhodesia and joined the military during the guerrilla war. Tom began his service
in the US Air Force, where he served between June 1969 and March 1973.
However, in 1977, he journeyed out to Africa and joined the Rhodesian
Corps of Engineers, where he served until the end of 1980, emerging as a
Sergeant. Tom is now a ranch foreman in his native United States and his hobbies
are suitably outdoors, being Hunting, Fishing, Ranching and Horses.

Tom was our first from the British Royal Tank Regiment, in which he
served from 1972-1981. Jockuk, who is originally from Scotland (as you may have
guessed), now lives in England. He's married, likes computers & music,
& is also a member of the Royal British Legion.

Kieron served in the 1er Regiment Etranger, 3eme Regiment Etranger D'Infanterie, & the 13 Demi Brigade Legion Etrangere between March 1992 & September 2001, emerging as a Caporal. Originally from Ireland, he now lives in the British Midlands, where he works as a Computer Technician. He's single & lists his interests as Walking, Swimming & Abseiling

Steven served in the Arkansas State
Police Criminal Investigation Division between June 1973 & July 1976,
when he gained a medical discharge (as he puts it ‘I dealt with a very angry
& intoxicated man with a shotgun, I lost’). Boarhog also served with Topeka
Municipal Police Department & is now in the private sector. He’s married,
lives in Kansas, & likes shooting sports, writing & music.

Eamonn served in the Irish 28th Infantry
Battalion from January '76 till July '84 & completed the Irish Army
Military Parachute Training course -- another Airborne! Eamonn, who is married
& lives in Galway, finished his time as a Corporal & list his hobbies
as Skydiving & Gym. He is also a member of the Irish Army National
Association of Ex-Servicemen (O.N.E.) & works in the insurance business. |

Scouts, between June 1976 & June 1979, emerging as a sergeant. Now
living in England, Geordie now works as a plumber & heating engineer, is
married & enjoys keeping fit & scuba diving.

Odd Georg Undem (P) Nom

Odd
was our 3rd member from Norway & served in both the military & the
police. He served in the N. Rogaland
Infantry Regiment IR 8 from 1947 to
1951, emerging as a second lieutenant. He then joined the Norwegian Police, where he served until 1981, retiring as a Police inspector. He is
married & lists his hobbies as contacting with family, military. friends
& other IPA members -- he found the IVA via an IPA link! Odd is hoping to
get in touch with many military veterans, & why not indeed!
Ø Amarender Vadivelu (M) Nom de Guerre = Cappy Cappy was an army dentist, serving in the Indian Army Dental Corps
from November 1977 till November 1982, & emerging as a Captain (hence the
NDG). Amarender, who lives in India, is married & lists his interests as
golf & chess. He was the first member to visit IVA HQ, but any
IVA-type is always welcome! |

This was not our first Dutch member but he was our first resident of the
Netherlands & veteran of the Dutch Armed Forces. Peter served in 42ste
Pantserinfanterie bataljon (42nd armoured
infantry battalion) between January 1978 & September 1979, emerging as a
corporal. What's more, he's still in uniform, working as a customs officer!
Peter, who's married, is very interested in the war in Indochina, &
stumbled upon the IVA while searching the internet for French Foreign Legion
badges.
Ø Raymond VAN DER LINDEN (M) Nom de Guerre = SATNIK RAY
Raymond was our first member resident in the Republic of Croatia, although he originally comes from the city of Roosendaal in the Netherlands. He began his military career in 1986, with the 425 I.B.C., (Infantry Security Company) of the Royal Dutch Army. However, like a few other IVA members, he went to help Croatia against the invading Serbians & in 1991, joined the Croatian Army's 118 Brigade, 2 Battalion, Scouts, later serving with the Croatian-Bosnian Army's (H.V.O.)104 Brigade Scouts Platoon. He retired from the regular Croatian Army in 1996 as a Captain. Sadly, he paid a heavy price for Croatia's independence, being 3 times wounded in action & once was clinically dead after surviving 20mm wound in the chest. Satnik, who is married with 3 children, lists his hobbies keeping in touch with army old-timers, diving, motor riding & building scale models of WW2 vehicles.
Ø Marinus Joost VAN DIJK (M) Nom de Guerre = Madustasa
Joost was our 2nd member in the Netherlands & our 2nd member to have served in the Croatian Army. To be precise, he started his military service with the Royal Dutch Army (Engineer Corps) between May 1985 & July 1986. He then moved on to serve in the Croatian National Guard (ZNG-RH), the forerunner of the Croatian Army (HV) in 1991. Later, he served in the 204br. Brigada Vukovarskih Veterana HV (Infantry) for the rest of his time in the Balkans. Joost is single & lists his hobbies as Computers & the Internet. However, he is a member of the CFIVA (Croatian Forces International Volunteers Association -- our 2nd member from that group), the Croatian Forces Living History Group & the Croatian Homeland War Volunteer Veterans Association, so as he says, he has 'plenty to do in my spare time.'

One of our first members, Joe spent his military career in the Foreign Legion.
Voltigeur, who originally came from the Netherlands, served in the 1er Regt. Etranger de Cavalerie from July 1959 till 1964, finishing up as Legionnaire 1er
Classe. Joe, who now lives in Alberta, Canada, was a very active man,
interested in swimming, long distance running, Kung-Fu & Kenpo, until an
unfortunate accident limited his actions. He now lists his hobbies as crossword
puzzles, international Email pen pals, & reading non-fiction. He
co-administers a Legion bulletin board & says he would like to get in
contact with former comrades who where with him in basic training & the
1ere REC. He's also hoping to contact a friend who moved to Australia in the
Melbourne area. His name is Martin Heusser.

Infantry between April 1961 & November 1963, emerging as a Lance
Corporal. Peter, who is married, has returned to live in his native England

Light Infantry (intake 140) as well as C Squadron of the Rhodesian SAS,

Bax, Colonel Trevor Des-Fountain & Squadron Sgt. Major (SAS) WO1
"Jock" Hutton. Bugeisha, who is Rhodesian born, is married & is
interested in photography.

Edgardo served in the Rhodesian Light

July 1979 till the end & then served in the Engineers. He is also a veteran

Major in the USA. He now lives on the island of Puerto Rico.

Cobus served in South Africa’s 32Bn.
Buffalo Regt. & is the man behind their excellent home page. Sobuc,
whose military career stretched from May 1968 till June 1979, also served in 3 South African Infantry, 1 Para Battalion.
Ending up with the rank of Sergeant, Sobuc now lives in the UK.

Gavan is another of our many Australian members, having served with the Royal Australian Armoured Corps & the School of Armour from April 1964 till January 1986, including service in Vietnam. Michael is part of our United States chapter, originating from New York
City but now living further south. He served in the US Navy (in the

from August 1995 till March 1998, finishing up as an ATAN (Aviation Electronics
Technician, Airman) Petty Officer. Rocky, who is single & operates a small,
mail-oriented business, lists his hobby as Scale Model Building.

Walrus served in Australia’s Royal New
South Wales Regiment (a militia
unit) between Nov. '66 & Jan '70. Walrus, who missed 'National Service' by
the luck of the draw (literally), is married & lists his hobbies as
'design, motorcycles, golf (kinda).' He lives in Perth, Western Australia &
is a Web Designer/Marketer by trade. He joined as an Associate because in his
very choice phrase, he is a 'vet supporter not a vet.'

Spider served in the British Royal
Engineers from September 1976 till September 1985 BUT he also volunteered
for Airborne service & spent some time with 9 Parachute Squadron Royal Engineers, including service during the
Falkland Island conflict in 1982. Spider, who now lives in England & is
married, is a telecom technician by profession & enjoys home brewing.

Bokkop now lives in Canada but originates from sunny Natal in South Africa. He
served with the 5th SA Infantry
Battalion in 1974-75 & emerged as a Lance-Corporal. He's married, lists
his hobbies as skiing, camping, fishing & golf, & commented that 'I
have many memories from my time spent in the infantry, although at the time I
thought it was the worst days of my life. I hope to be able to contact others
that were in the service the same time as I was.' I know we have some other 5
SAI guys out there so why not?

Huwwin is another
Airborne vet, having served in the US Army's 1/319- 2/321FA (airborne)
& 12 SFG Airborne between September 1975 & January 1995,
emerging as a First Sergeant. Hubert, who's married, works as a Locomotive
Engineer & when not working, he enjoys Shooting. He first applied having
seen mention of the IVA on Paratrooper.net.

Jonathan just made it through the hoops to become our
first member of the 21st century. Jon is from the beautiful city of Bulawayo
& served in the Rhodesian Army, notably in the Rhodesian Light Infantry from January 1976 till January 1982,
emerging as a Sergeant. Jon, who is married & lives in South Africa, is
married & lists shooting & weapons as his hobbies. Actually, Jon first
applied back in 1999 but contacted me again after seeing a piece in 'Soldier of
Fortune' magazine written by our own JohnC.

Manny was introduced to us by DJ,
served for 20 years in the US Virgin
Islands Police, leaving as a Detective Sergeant in 1992. However, he also
served in the US Coast Guard from 1965-1969 & the Army National
Guard from 1970-78, being discharged as a Captain. Manny, who is married &
lists Carpentry & Photography as his hobbies, lives in Florida & works
as a Security Consultant.
