Chapter 45:
                                        {Kiwi}

~Nick and Brian~

"I really should be going with her Bro." Nick said still staring at Melissa walk down the hall to the airplane. "Don't worry about it buddy. You can survive with out lovin for a couple days." Brian assured him with a joke. "Ha, ha, ha" Nick laughed sarcastically.

~Melissa and Val~

"Girl, I don't know about this." Melly said as she shoved her bag into the overhead compartment. "You'll be just fine. You're mom needs you to be there. That's the important thing right now." Val said sitting down next to the window. "Sure sure." Melly put her headphones on.

~Val thinking to herself~

"Is Melly honestly still mad at me? After I dropped everything to come to Jersey with her? I can't believe that she can just have such a hatred towards me... for God's sake, I've been her friend through thick and thin, through an uncountable number of boyfriends, breakups, reunions, everything. Especially helping her through the whole ordeal with Ethan and Jason. I still can't believe she hasn't said, 'sorry', 'thank you' anything. Oh well. It's going to be a long flight. I'll just get some sleep."

~Melly's thoughts~

"Val is just going to tag along to Jersey like nothing ever happened. Sure, she's my best friend, and will be no matter what, but she did betray me by getting married without me being there. Nick and I will just have to make upfor it when he joins us in Hawthorne. I wonder if that chapel on King's Ave is still open? I'll call after I get home from the hospital. - Look at her, she's just going to sleep this whole trip away - I'll show you bitch. Nick and I will become husband and wife whether you are there or not."

~Brian and Nick~

"I'm sure they'll work it out on the plane. It's a direct flight right?" Brian asked Nick. "Yeah, they'll have lots of time to talk about it. By the time we join em on Saturday, it'll be just like old times." Brian reassured him. "I sure hopeso." Nick sighed.

~Melly's Dad In Jersey at the Hospital~

"Bette, Melly is on the way honey. "Don't worry... she'll be here soon." Dave said to Melissa mom as she lay in her hospital bed. "Just a couple more hours." Dave repeated to himself as he watched Bette sleep silently with the medical tubes running into her.

~On the plane~

"Melly.. you who! Gurl, we need to talk!" Val got her attention. "What?" Melly asked taking her headphones off. "We need to talk!" Val repeated. "About what?" Melly seemed irritated. "Us! The friendship! This!" Val was nowgetting frustrated. "I don't think there's anything to talk about, you're here because you're my friend, and my family'sfriend. That's all. I thank you for coming, but I'm still mad at you." Melly said not once looking Val in the eye."Melissa Anne! What are you planning?" Val rose her voice. "Nothing!" Mel fought back. "I know you better than that Melissa! You're up to something. It's none of my business. So I'm gonna leave it alone.. but be careful!" Val warned. "I'm a grown woman and I can take care of myself." Melissa put her headphones back on. "Oh dear" Val mumbled to herself and looked out the window. Obviously the two were still at war, even if Val did drop everything to go across country. If Melissa was planning to get married without Val, was it because of their fight, just to get back at her? Or was it because she loved Nick so much that she couldn't wait any longer? Or perhaps a combination of the two. Nick and Melissa had already postponed their vows for other reasons, but now? Is it the right time? If Melissa's mother was in critical condition, was it the appropriate time for a wedding?

  ~Val's Thoughts~

"I know Melly is up to something... she has to be. I just hope this doesn't involve any one getting hurt anymore thanthey already are. Especially Bette, poor lady, man, first her daughter rejects all her plans for a fantasy wedding, then this!" Val looked over at Melissa who was facing the other way, "Please Melissa, just be careful, whatever you are going to do, be careful." Val spoke silently.

~Nick and Brian~

"Is everything ready for us to go on Saturday?" Nick asked Brian. "Yeah man, we moved some things around andthey're writing this off as a 'Promotional'. Meaning we're gonna have to do a little press conference thing in Newark, otherwise it's all off and we can't get the time off." Brian explained what the tour manager had told him."I'll do it.... just because it's the only way I can be with Melly and her family. But I'm not answering ANYTHING personal." Nick sighed. "Me either man! Have you seen the tabloids already? They've blown up the wedding and twisted it around so much, I'm even believing some of it!" Brian laughed looking at the front page of the newspaper where a headline read "
Backstreet Boy Marries Backstreet Girl: Brian's wife former prostitute!" He pointed it out to Nick. "Val? A hooker? HA!" Nick burst out laughing. "What's the supposed to mean?" Brian jokedback. "It means... Val a hooker? Never! I mean come on man, think about it... Valerie... innocent Valerie... a hooker? yeah right!" Nick laughed still reading over the article, "Have you even read this whole thing?" Nick added."No." Brian answered. "Read it!" Nick handed him the paper.

~The article~

~Ethan and Jason~

"That'll show them!" Ethan smirked as he read the article he has made up and sold to the reporters in exchange for the bail of Elaine. "Yeah!" Jason and Elaine agreed laughing as they sat in a small cafe after Elaine had been released.

  ~Nick and Brian~

"Oh God, they blew this one of proportion!" Brian laughed. "Or did they?" Nick joked around. "Yes they did! Val wouldn't do that.... and if she did or would... it wouldn't be with anyone else on tour!" Brian laughed. "Wait! Did you read this part?" Nick pointed out the very last line of the article. "Yeah, were they are gonna keep digging for more."Brian reread the last line. "No, no, they VERY last line.." Nick read it out loud, "'Story by Shawn Hansen, resourceclose friend of Littrell and Lachean's Ethan Dwiggins.'... THAT BASTARD!" Nick jumped up outraged. "Nicky boy, settle down! It's no big deal. Both Val and I know it isn't true." Brian set the paper back on the table. "But...but..." Nick trailed off still mad as he sat down. "But nothing Nick. It's just a reporter that can't get real stories so they makethem up. No big deal." Brian repeated. "How did they talk to the dumbass though?" Nick questioned. "I don't know."Brian blew it off. "I don't care either." He added. "Is it Saturday yet?" Nick asked the question that the obvious answer to was 'No'. "I should keep all these articles. It'd be a funny anniversary
gift." Brian laughed as he tore thepage of the newspaper in half to keep the article. "Wonder if Val knows about her past?" Brian mumbled still laughing.

  ~On the plane~
   ~Val and Mel~

"Look, I think that's who they are talking about." One of the flight attendants mumbled to the another, as they pointed to Val who was still looking out the window. "Do you think it's true?" Another asked the others. "I don't know. But we certainly have the controversial celebrity on the flight don't we?" They all laughed. Melissa overheard all of them talking and pressed the assistance button above her seat for an attendant to come over. "How can I help you Ma'am?" The flight attendant asked as she approached Melissa's seat. "Could I pleaseget a newspaper to read, there doesn't seem to be one in any of these seat pockets." Melissa waved her hand towards her and Val's seat pockets. "Of course, one moment ma'am." Pamela, the flight attendant answered, walking off to find Melissa a newspaper. "Here you are." Pamela returned a couple minutes later with a newspaper. "Thank you." Melissa responded. "Now, what could they be talking about?" Melissa asked herself glancing over at Val as she opened the paper.Melissa gasped. 'I knew Val worked as a bartender when we lived in Vegas... but this?' Melissa mumbled to herself. "She's not that innocent." Melissa sang softly to herself in the tune of the Britney Spears' song.
