| It was Christmas morning... I woke up like any other day no big deal. This was my first Christmas away from my family. I started college in September in Fairbanks, three hundred miles away from my family. Not very far, but far enough that I couldn't drive home for the holidays. I decided to spend the day at home, when my roommate got back, we'd exchange the gifts we got for each other and that would be it. Nothing more. It was 11:30 am. Monique, my roommate, had just left to go to her boyfriend's dorm to celebrate. My boyfriend on the other hand had flown to Anchorage to be with his parents. I was alone, all morning, all afternoon. Monique wasn't to return until at least 4 o'clock if not later. I turned on the tv, maybe a few holiday movies would perk me up. "White Christmas" with Bing Crosby was on channel 5. And the one that is constantly on during the holidays... "Wonderful Life" on channel 2. I flipped back and forth between the two for about an hour and became very bored by them quickly. I've seen them every December since I could remember the lovey storylines were too much for me being away from my family. A few hours passed and there was a knock on the door. Who would be coming to my dormroom on Chirstmas Day? I figured it could've been Monique if she had forgotten her key and needed to get something. I pulled myself up off of the couch, slid my feet into my monkey slippers and walked over to the door. I slipped the chain off the door and turned the knob, as I opened the door I saw Brian standing in front of me. "What are you doing here?" I said shocked. "Thanks for the welcoming greeting, can't I come in?" He responded with a half-grin. "Oh, of course I'm sorry." I said opening the door wider so he could come inside. "Aren't you supposed to be in Anchorage with your parents?" I asked moving some of the pillows around on the couch so he could sit down. "I got down to Talkeetna and had to come back." He began to say... "Listen, Nia, I was going to wait until New Year's Eve to do this, but I can't hold it back any longer." He took my hands in his, before he started talking again I could already feel the tears starting to form in my eyes. "Nia, I love you so much and now I know the moment is right, I've been waiting to give this gift tonight..." He paused kneeling on the floor, "There is no better time, it's something to last as long as you live, tonight I'm gonna give you, all my heart. Nia Cartwright, will you marry me?" Brian finished almost beginning to cry himself. He held out a pink diamond ring. I felt so overwhelmed with emotions I couldn't even speak. I simply nodded and he slipped the engagement ring on my finger. I pulled him up into a hug, after finally being able to compose myself I whispered into his ear, "I love you, you are the best gift anyone could ever give to me." I gave him a soft kiss and we stayed in each other's arms for the rest of the evening. |
