A condensed Bio and review of Architectural Events & Work Experience over the years:

Orange County

RAL begins his professional architectural career doing graphic PERT planning, Site Design & 3-D modeling in the offices of William Pereira, AIA during 1968-1970
Projects produced out of this office during my tenure included;

The Transamerica Insurance & Finance Building (the big pyramid) San Francisco, CA,
Master Plan of the City of Irvine
The (original, ground up) University of California, Irvine
The University of California Library, San Diego (La Jolla)
Renovation of Los Angeles International Airport

RAL moves to architectural offices of Stewart Woodard, AIA; tenure 1970-72
Here RAL co-designed Interiors of SW AIA offices as well as;
Fashion Island shopping plaza, Newport Beach, CA
Two residential tracts and four private homes.
RAL work won the firm national awards for the design of the Lake Geneva Prespetrian Church, El Toro, CA, and for exterior elements of Robinson’s May Department Store(now Macy’s), and the total design of the Apropos Boutique, Fashion Island.

West Indies

RAL moves full time to the West Indies in 1973, working with the offices of John Newel Lewis Architects, Port of Spain, Trinidad.
Developed Prickly Bay Resort, at Lance aux Pines, Grenada. This project included RAL co-designing the Calabash Hotel, The Red Crab restaurant, the Prickly Bay Marina, and 26 private residences.
RAL designed six houses at the Secret Harbor Resort, and also restored the 175-year-old Black Bay Plantation to its former colonial glory, the crown of the Concord Valley.

While wintering on Barbados; RAL assisted Sir Ronald Tree remodel four villas at Sandy Lane Estates. RAL designed Alexandra’s Club & Restaurant, at the 180-year-old Bishop’s Hill Estate, and was co-owner with Noel Charles. RAL designed five residences on Barbados, and two other restaurants, Bagatelle (restoring the 18thcentury governor’s mansion), and Nick’s Seafood. After 13 winter seasons, RAL permanently left the West Indies for Asia.

Indonesia;
RAL travels to Bali, Indonesia in June 1979, maintained a home there from 1980 to 1985, designing three private residences in Legian, two beach clubs in Kuta, and building an elaborate art studio in Ubud. RAL lived in Sanur & Legian.

Latin America
After a decade of extended trips throughout Mexico & Central America, RAL found himself working on designs for resort properties. In 1986 RAL went on to design the Hotel Arco Iris, Playa Zicatala, in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, as well as a number of private beachside residences in the states of Oaxaca, Jalisco, Michocan. Two residences were completed in Playa Golfito, Pavones, Costa Rica, in 1987.

RAL was fortunate to work with the offices of Edward Giddings, AIA, of Newport Beach, CA/USA, on the internationally acclaimed Ocho Cascades project in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco. This affiliation started upon his return from Asia in 1985.

These eight private villas won the AIA International Design Award for three years. For a decade this development was the highest rated time-share exchange rated property in the world.

After the PV project RAL moved on to design & planning work at the Club Cascades de Baja project in Cabo San Lucas BCS, which was completed in late 1988. He also designed a half dozen private residences in Cabo; Pedrigal, Baja Poche, Cabo Bello, & Todos Santos developments, all completed by 1990.

Hawaii
RAL was a former principal partner in Haiku Home Systems Inc. This California Corporation designed, manufactured, and constructed Asian pavilion style ‘Pole Houses’. The business was a California company, but operated out of Oahu, Hawaii, from 1977 to 1987.

These ‘Haiku’ homes were prefabricated wooden homes, exceptional for tropical climates, based on 16th century Japanese architecture (RAL’s graduate thesis was on this subject). He co-designed these beautiful and entirely modular housing systems specifically for Hawaii, and sold over a hundred of these homes there. All wood components were prefabricated and finished in Oregon lumber mills, then shipped to the site in containers. Haiku homes were also built in locations outside of Hawaii, including California, Vermont, Florida, and Arizona. The original brand was eventually sold, and reformed, operating as ‘Japanese Pavilion Homes’ with RAL’s former partner Richard Leitch, AIA, acting as Director.

RAL worked as a principal designer, Interior Designer, Client Fulfillment Manager, and Marketing Director for the Haiku Home Systems Company.

SoCal
Throughout much of this same period RAL maintained a parallel occupation as an apparel designer, fabricator, and merchandiser. Architectural aspects of this separate career included the active fusion of architectural planning with the design issues required of large scale visual merchandising. RAL maintained independent display studios on 18th St. in Costa Mesa, CA that serviced dozens of competing sportswear companies, completing comprehensive public relations, advertising, and event planning projects for each client.

This output included working with a core staff of six and designing and fabricating over 75 major convention display booths, 285 retail store interiors, hundreds of department store POP product sectionals and uncountable window displays. Accounts also included creating special events for industry association annual balls, charity auctions, and stand-alone product line releases, and generally were designed and fabricated on an oversized scale.

RAL left this work to resume full time architecture & property development, leaving his position at Quiksilver Worldwide/ Visuals (Costa Mesa, CA), (Steve Jones, Division Head). Despite happy relationships with Bob McKnight CEO & Danny Kwock COO, he left the company in 2000, relocating to SE Asia.

Twenty First Century

After taking some years off during the nineties to work as both Author and Educator, RAL decided life outside of the US was more suitable for his practice. Asia has always been central to RAL’s aesthetic sensibilities, and when invited to Koh Samui by an American associate with 25 years experience on the island, he accepted the offer. There RAL remained active, starting with becoming the top 2002 sales producer at Island Land Sales Ltd., in Bang Rak, Bhophut, Koh Samui. Many of his property clients became Architecture clients.

RAL began an extensive study of Thai law, particularly in regards to land development, and established strong working relationships with scores of major business professionals, both Thai and Farang (western). In 2002 Tropical Project Associates, RAL’s consulting firm, negotiated over 875 million THB in active property deals, and brokered some of the most exclusive properties on the island, many for international resort corporations.

RAL concentrated on serving larger, corporate accounts, and exclusive private clients (client list on request), and created an amazing network of design, development, and media contacts, of which, via TPA Ltd., he offered to clients on an independent consultancy basis.

RAL serviced a select client list in the planning, architectural design, and the construction execution of a remarkable collection of private residences and boutique resorts. These projects cover the years of 2001 to 2004, and as Managing Director of Tropical Project Associates Ltd., RAL has influenced the creation of over a dozen key projects in Southern Thailand. A CD with a 200 image collection of selected Architectural & Interior works from this period is available as portfolio.

During this same period RAL served as founding author, Senior Editor, and Public Relations Director of Community Magazine. This stylish large format bi-lingual publication continues to address prominent issues facing Koh Samui, one of the world’s premier resort destinations, and explores the diverse aspects that make living and visiting there truly remarkable.

Included among the 40,000 words of original journalism he wrote for each monthly issue were RAL’s columns devoted to insightful critiques of community planning issues and to architectural design, both on the island and across the region.

RAL’s editorial comments and journalistic pieces concerning planning and the environmental impact of development have been quoted on the front page of The Nation, the largest English language newspaper in a five country region, as well as paraphrased in their Editorials.

One 2003 piece directly contributed to motivating the Thai Central Government into allocating 190 million THB to address the severe water shortage caused by extensive growth on Samui, eventually leading to replacement of the entire municipal water system, one that serves over a million and a half people per year.

RAL is currently residing in Newport Beach, California, and negotiating exclusive residential design & development contracts (primarily in the Beverly Hills/Los Angeles area), and working as a development and architectural design consultant to both property owners and developers. He is also consulting as a Public Relations advisor to a leading art gallery.
