Haunting the streams in Midtjylland

During the summer season of 2003, i have been living in the northern part of Jylland, Denmark.
This part of the country is blessed with some overwhelming nature (although not as pristine as Norway and Sweden). Due to the fact that i lived right in the middle of it, i could get some serious segments done in the most famous streams there (Karup Aa, Vorgod Aa, Konge Aa, Simested Aa and some of the lakes).
Read about some of my adventures right here.

Karup Aa

The world famous Karup Aa was my first "victim". After arranging a permit, which is easier said than done, i could start fishing.
Knowing absolutely nothing of the local ways to chase rainbows and -foremost!- seatrout, i first tried with ultra light gear and a tiny dry fly (my absolute favourite!). This resulted in a couple of small brooktrouts, but i knew there was a lot more to capture!
In the "kro" (Inn) that was situated next to the river, there were many plates hanging on the wall with the local records on them.. Considering that there were trouts mentioned of over 20 kilo's, i realised i had to change technique.
When i changed to a nymph, this immediately resulted in catching
a big rainbow!

Unfortunately it seems that the locals have been taking a lot of large trout from the stream, without replacing it. The density of fish, especially LARGE fish is so low compared to e.g. Austria or Germany, that it really takes every skill you have to catch that one lunker that's still there.
I can't say it enough times: RELEASE YOUR FISH!!!! LEAVE SOMETHING FOR THE GENERATIONS THAT FOLLOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Vorgod Aa

This river, although not as famous as River Karup, proved to be a very interesting stream!
Here i had the honour of catching
my first Danish grayling.
The river had a healthy population of these noble fish, and many got caught by yours truly:-))))
In this ecosystem, things seem to be more in order, although the size of the fish was a little bit disappointing. Considering the fact that i was there early in the season (April 2003), i'll give this stream the benefit of the doubt.
By the end of May i'll be back there, and i will of course report here in the Trouthunter's lair!

Coming up soon:

The Gudenaa!

By the end of May, i'll be fishing the world famous Gudenaa. After investigating many websites of collegue-enthusiasts, and consulting some locals, i think i know where i should be to chase Atlantic Salmon, Rainbow trout, seatrout and... Grayling!
Yep, although the grayling is, by geographical means, bound to the east-side of Jylland, some fishermen have been taking live grayling on their bicycles, and put them in the upper parts of River Guden in the late fifties. Thanks to them, there now seems to be a healthy and self-supporting population of this beauties there!
Now let's hope and pray for the day to come when rainbow trout figures out to multiply in Europe...

Reports will -of course!- follow
