1.

SUN RIVER, a Creation Story
by Kelcie A.

In the beginning, Keeshu the god, made apes on a new planet he called Earth. Keeshu thought that the apes would be happy where he put them; however, the apes didn’t like it.

“Let’s go somewhere else,” one ape named Natal said.

“But won’t the creator be mad?” asked another named Laurel.

“I’m sure he won’t,” said the head ape named Varon.

So they migrated to about five miles from where they once lived. It was a nice place, kind of tropic. Then Natal got thirsty.

“I am thirsty,” he said. “I will go search for a river to drink out of.”

He looked and looked. Just as he thought to give up he heard the sound of running water. He ran to where he heard the wonderful sound and found a wide, shallow, river. He dropped to his knees and began to drink. There was something about the river that Natal didn’t notice. It glowed like the sun in the evening light.

After a few minutes Natal finished his drink from the river and returned to his camp. He told his camp about the delicious river he drank from. While he did this, his fellow apes stared at him like he looked different, but the others weren’t thirsty yet and they wanted to go to bed.

Later when they woke up the next morning Natal was gone!

They called his name a bunch of times, but there was no sign that Natal had heard them. Finally, around noon, they heard a twig snap, and out from the bushes came Natal!

“Ah, there you are Natal,” said Varon. He sounded relieved.

“We called your name lots of times,” said Laurel, “didn’t you hear us?”

“Huh,” Natal said scratching his head, “I guess not.”

“Is anyone thirsty?” Natal asked a few hours later.

“No, we found another stream close by,” said Drasel, Natal’s older brother.

Natal smiled, “okay” and he walked into the thick forest.

Days went by, and Natal started to look less like an ape and more like a new creature the apes had never seen before.

One bright day, Natal, just coming back from a long drink from his river he called Sun River, walked into the camp. Laurel screamed. Varon came running to see what was wrong It was Natal! He didn’t look like an ape anymore! He didn’t have hair anymore except for some on his head!

“GET OUT OF HERE!” Varon bellowed. “OUT, OUT!”

So Natal was forced to leave their camp and go across the big, wide, vast ocean to another land far away. He could never come back to thier camp as long as he lived. So he built a boat to go across the big ocean. He of course packed food. So he paddled and paddled and finally his boat scraped the shore and he jumped out of the boat and on to dry land.

There were other people there, too. He didn’t know how they got there, but he thought that they drank from a similar river.

And that was the beginning of people.
